Military Barracks Blasted Over Horrid Living Conditions, Lack of Accountability

During the last century, there was a tradition among American families where one generation after another would do time in uniform. This chain appears to be broken now.

Newspeople avoid asking questions.

A couple of ideas on why interest in new enlistments has declined:

Never Forget-

The US Armed Forces were irrelevant in defending American rights and freedoms, our physical security, & The Constitution on 911.

Ditto for all other federal agencies and departments.

Also, the aftermath of the catastrophic military failure of 911.

Anybody fired over this?

More Discussion Please – DOD Recruiting Crisis:

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.

Understandable why young people & their parents & grandparents would take a dim view on all this.

Thousands of American families have now had a loved one who did one or more tours in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Will they support new enlistments?

US press plays along by not asking questions.

Currently serving four-star officers and high level DOD civilians have been associated with what wars won by the US?

If DOD was an NFL team, sports talk radio would feature comments like:

The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911. We haven’t won a war since.

Any college or pro football coach would have been fired a dozen times over for what DOD has done with the US Armed Forces during the fake GWOT era.

During the Vietnam War, US troops were sent to Vietnam.

Today, the Ohio National Guard is sent to “support Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.”

Have Port Angeles based Homeland Security/CBP units been able to create any shortage of cartel product/fentanyl in the Puget Sound area? Has any newsperson ever asked questions on this?

Introduction:

I like President Trump.

I grew up in the Cold War era of the 1960s and 70s.

In the 60s and 70s, hard drugs were available to rock musicians and celebrities. They worked for a living and were not camping on the sidewalk. When drug abuse led to fatalities, those lessons learned were available to all.

Homeland Security Has Been A Failure Or A Scam?

Newspeople avoid questions on Homeland Security funding and performance.

Did General Milley’s Operation Macho Swagger reduce access to cartel product anywhere in the US?

Has there been enough time for newspeople to ask questions?

Newspeople remain silent.

April 1, 2020 C-SPAN

WWII costume reminds us of a time before decades of undeclared/unwon wars stacked up.

The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.

1960s and 70s

No US Dept. of Homeland Security.

Please compare the streets of downtown Seattle in the 60s and 70s to what is going on now. We are talking everywhere between The Space Needle and what used to be called Chinatown. Pike Place Market, waterfront, Ivars, Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, etc.

Drug addicts camping in the sidewalk? If they were there, major US cities were not yielding the right of way to them. Were US drug overdose death numbers higher before the US Dept. of Homeland Security was established (2002) or are the numbers higher with a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security in place? This giant federal agency now has more than two decades of experience and lessons learned in working to prevent cartel product from entering the US. More overdose deaths now, or before DHS?

Newspeople have a long history of not asking questions in these areas.

Valhalla VFT

I like the way he speaks on the issues.

Valhalla VFT tells us that US special forces are in 90 different countries/allied nations at all times.

A few questions:

Around 10:37 in the video, Valhalla VFT has been explaining that special forces has years of extensive experience in working with nations all over the world to combat the drug trade. Love to see newspeople ask questions on what role a giant and expensive US Dept. of Homeland Security plays in all this.

Was it a good idea to announce US military action against the cartels in advance?

At 20:00 he says that cartel drug prices in the US will go up. Does this mean there will be more catalytic converter theft and other crimes to allow addicts to purchase drugs?

Let’s Invade Mexico!
Another Entry in the Tourney of Damn Fool Ideas

by Fred Reed Posted on November 12, 2019

“Trump phrased this as an offer to help, not a threat to invade, which is reassuring. AMLO, Mexico’s president, wisely declined the offer.”

“Few Americans are aware of how much the United States is hated in Latin America, and for that matter in most of the world. They don’t know of the long series of military interventions, brutal dictators imposed and supported, and economic rapine. Somoza, Pinochet, the Mexican-American War, detachment of Panama from Colombia, bombardment of Veracruz, Patton’s incursion – the list could go on for pages. The Mexican public would look upon American troops not as saviors but as invaders. Which they would be.”

“The incursion would not defeat the cartels, for several reasons that trump would do well to ponder. To begin with, America starts its wars by overestimating its own powers, underestimating the enemy, and misunderstanding the kind of war on which it is embarking. The is exactly what Trump seems to be doing.”

“He probably thinks of Mexicans as just gardeners and rapists and we have all these beautiful advanced weapons and beautiful drones and things with blinking lights. A pack of rapists armed with garden trowels couldn’t possibly be difficult to defeat by the US. I mean, get serious: Dope dealers against the Marines? A cakewalk.”

“You know, like Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. That sort of cakewalk. Let’s think what an expedition against the narcos would entail, what it would face.”

In frustration American forces would do what they always do: start bombing, or launching Hellfires from drones, at what they think are, or think may be, or hope might be, narcos. Frequently they would kill innocents having nothing to do with drugs. This wouldn’t bother the military, certainly not remote drone operators in Colorado or somewhere. They get paid anyway. The Indians who just had their families turned into science projects couldn’t do anything about it.”

“Well, nothing but join the narcos, who might call this a “force multiplier.”

“…much consists of jungle, presenting the same problems as the Sierra Madre, and of cities and villages. Here we encounter the problem that has proved disastrous for US forces in war after war: there is no way to tell who is a narco and who isn’t.”

“In cities and towns, narcos are indistinguishable from the general population. How – precisely how, I want to know – would American troops, kitted out in body armor and goggles and looking like idiots, fight the narcos in villages with which they were unfamiliar? The narcos, well armed, would pick off GIs from windows, whereupon the Americans would respond by firing at random, calling in air strikes, and otherwise killing locals. These would now hate Americans. The narcos know this. They would use it.”

“Culiacan, Sinaloa, Chapo’s home city. It has a high concentration of narcos. Suppose that you are an infantry officer, sent to “fight the cartels.” You have, say, twenty troops with you, all with hi-tech equipment and things dangling. How do you propose to fight the cartels here? Which of the people in the photo, if any, are narcos? You could ask them. That would work.”

Don’t expect help from the locals. Most would much rather see you killed than the narcos. And if they collaborated they and their families would be killed. This would discourage them. Bright ideas?”

“Now a point that Schwarzehairdye in the White House has likely not grasped. The narcos are Mexicans. So is the population. You know, brown, speak Spanish, that kind of thing. The invaders would not be Mexicans. This matters. Villagers usually do not hate the narcos. These provide jobs, buy their marijuana crops, often do Robin Hood things to help the locals. Pablo Escobar did this, Al Capone, Chapo Guzman. There is a whole genre of popular music, narcocorridos, celebrating the doings of the drug trade.”

Getting the American military into one’s country is much easier than getting it out. The world knows this. Mexicans assuredly do. They know that America has wrecked country after country in the Mideast, always to do something good about democracy and human rights. They know that America is squeezing Venezuela to get control of its oil, squeezing Iran for the same reason, attacked Iraq for the same reason, has troops in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for the same reason, and has just confiscated Syria’s oil . Mexico has oil. So when Trump wants to send the military to “help” fight drugs, what do you suppose the Mexicans suspect?”

“Another point: Roughly a million American expats live happily in Mexico. These would be hostages, and they – we – are soft targets. The drones kill five narcos, and the narcos kill five expats. Or ten, or fifty. What does Washington do now?”

US Dept. of Defense

The US Dept. of Defense was established after WWII, in the late 1940s. DOD has a truly poor track record with undeclared wars.

If DOD was an NFL team, sports talk radio would feature comments like:

The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911. We haven’t won a war since.

Another area where the press goes easy on asking questions. Does DOD have a good track record for solving problems in distant lands?

If there were valid reasons for overseas military operations, they wouldn’t need to tell us that it’s all somehow linked to American rights and freedoms.

During the Vietnam War, US troops were sent to Vietnam.

Today, the Ohio National Guard is sent to “support Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.”

Positive on the campaign trail

Big money donations, and big polling numbers, big crowd estimates and high energy political rallies, big celebrity enthusiasm, big TV news and social media coverage, and big support from people who made it to the very highest levels of government and politics.

Negative in Hometown, USA

Camping on the sidewalk, frequent gunfire, illegal street racing, public consumption of fentanyl, organized shoplifting, etc.

Maybe a DOD draft sometime in the future?

What makes elected officials believe we have some sort of 1950s crop of citizens who would comply with a draft?

For sure, the ongoing breakdown of society does not encourage new enlistments.

The drug addicts camping on the sidewalk aren’t going to sign up. The people who are able are not wanting to serve a country that spends $51.6 billion (every 12 months) on US Dept. of Homeland Security that fails to create any shortage of opioids in the Puget Sound area, then yields the right of way to the sidewalk campers and those who want to protest on an interstate highway.

How the Libertarian Party Lost Its Way

Here is the Oak Bay Starfish take:

TV newspeople will cover both major parties and whoever those parties nominate as a candidate. The press will be present on the campaign trail for both major parties. Made for TV debates will be hosted by TV newspeople and candidates from both major parties will be invited to these debates.

The press and the Uniparty prefer standard/more of the same politicians. These are the candidates the press is happy to see on the TV debate stage. We are talking Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, etc. The Uniparty and the press are not OK with candidates who may question the system or push back at interviewers and newspeople. Tulsi Gabbard, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Ron Paul, these are the candidates that will not be approved by the TV. Trump is most hated but he is in the very unusual position of being the protest vote who may also go on to take office. Really hot to handle, so the TV goes into months of coverage to do anything possible to trip him up.

The TV debates will feature questions that tend to be friendly to both major parties. Both major parties and TV networks will set up or change rules for the TV debates. Notice how football rules will not be changed months ahead of the next Super Bowl.

No Libertarian candidate on the TV debate stage

No Libertarian candidate will be seen on the TV debate stage. The debates are meant to be linked to voting, but when do we vote on decades on undeclared/unwon DOD wars? RNC/DNC candidates on the TV debate stage will not interrupt to ask: When do we vote on undeclared wars? The press will not bring it up. No libertarian is there to ask about it. The big party machines and TV news networks have already edged out any candidate who would ask.

Politics is controlled by majority rule.

The majority of people who vote will pick one of two major political parties to support each time a major election takes place. These two political parties will take turns in power.

May be for a good cause. Not implying any abuse of the system here, just noticing the effort to get the word out on EBT.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. We had gas stations. They would install a new fan belt, check under the hood, do an oil change, give directions or sell you a map, etc. For food, they had a pop machine and a Cold War era vending machine with candy, gum, and little packs of crackers. Maybe two or three of these.

The place smelled like auto transmission fluid and gear oil. Not a bad thing-happy to go back.

Schools scramble to feed students after coronavirus closures

Kiyana Esco needs free school lunches and breakfasts to feed her six children. But with schools shutting down over coronavirus concerns, she’s scrambling to pick up the meals, care for her kids and keep her job.”

Thank you WHSV, for acknowledging that we are talking about a federal free and reduced school breakfast and lunch program. The press often calls it a free lunch program. The average person, who has no kids in school may not realize that breakfast is also part of the program.

March 13, 2020 CNN

The coronavirus pandemic is closing schools. How will kids eat?

“But as other schools deliberate shutting their doors to slow the spread of the coronavirus, some parents may be left to wonder: If schools close, how will my child eat?

Former Lunch Lady here.

Again, I do not object to public assistance programs. The press should make an effort to keep the public informed on how these programs are working.

Did the WWII generation rely heavily on public school districts to feed their kids? If they did, was for the assistance program covering just basic items like potatoes, flour, dried beans, rice, apples if there was crop surplus, etc.

100 years ago, did families rely on school districts to feed their children to such an extent that, if school was shut down, school districts would scramble to fill busses with food and send it out into the neighborhoods?

Tax money-which some people intend to be used to help others via public assistance programs-also goes for bombing Iraq and Afghanistan.

Helping others by donating to churches or private charities, food banks, etc. can avoid these conflicts.

Donors are free to opt out if a charity misbehaves.

People could keep more of their own money to donate to causes of their choosing if the federal government was not taking it to pay for wasteful programs.

I am from the last century.

I try to think of myself and others as individuals, rather than as members of a group.

Today, American popular and political culture insists on dividing people up into groups, then assigning a separate value to each group.

I went to USMC boot camp after high school in 1979. One of the best parts of my time in the Marine Corps was living and working with people from all 50 states, some foreign countries and every color under the sun. Women and people of color were frequently my bosses at the officer and enlisted level.

In the 90s, I was aware that you could head over to the daycare facility at any military base and see kids of all colors playing together without any regard for what color they are, or what color their Mom or Dad is.

Interracial marriage was quite common. People were family oriented and loving their kids.

This good news about loving families will not show up on the TV.

Those Moms and Dads will not be interviewed for a TV news story related to any of this.

Random thoughts:

Did race issues become better or worse after President Obama completed 8 years in the White House?

America now seems very much about identity politics. Since American culture prefers to identify individuals based on their family heritage & color of skin, do black mayors and chiefs of police have a better record for controlling violence and police abuse in their cities?

Do women who are mayors and chiefs of police have a better record?

Has there ever been any news reporting on this?

Individual rights and de-escalation of police encounters should be taught and understood as a requirement for high school graduation.

Road Trip Report – Mask Up For Watersports – WA COVID

More from Washington State Parks:

Shut Off The TV And Get Outside For A Bit

I am a wait and see sort of person. I was not quick to believe the GWOT was fake. It took years for me to look and see what was happening.

Below, are some random thoughts and questions newspeople will not ask. Our questions appear in bold type.

Was It A Fake War On Terror?

During the COVID time-

I did not speak out against vaccines or anyone who takes them. Ditto for mask wearing indoors or out.

Around September of 2021, we moved to a new community. My wife and I agreed that in the first few weeks, while getting settled, we would find a local place where we could get the shot. Just about that time, there seemed to be some question about which version of the vaccine was the one to take or avoid.

Restaurants were still changing up inside dining protocols.

From a Sept 2021 blog:

Dining Out

Ocean Shores, WA: Took a guest and went out to a place we enjoyed several weeks ago.

Small waiting line to get in.

Masks must be worn to enter.

So far, so good. Just like last time.

Seated at table when new format and protocols kick in:

Entire order will be taken all at the same time and will be paid for in advance.

Can we order a beer to start? No, entire order will be taken all at the same time.

Bar is open, several beers are on tap. No beer list at the table to let us know what is available.

When you are ready to order-slide menus over the edge of the table.

We saw a ketchup bottle on the table recently at another place. Works for us.

Last night, ketchup comes in tiny cups. Water comes in a bottle.

The place we went last night appeared to be fully staffed with good people. Not here to complain about restaurant staff.

Here to ask:

How much of the new dining format (not masks) is forced by the state and how much is made up by the local business?

Is there any medical advantage that comes with the new format?

If it is the choice of the business, what are they trying to achieve?

It seems like the plan is to cause meaningless inconvenience.

If you notice the inconvenience, maybe you will think that the establishment is somehow going out of their way because they care about protecting you.

I will wait on the sidelines if dining out features unpredictable new protocols. The whole idea of returning to a place you like is to duplicate the experience you had before.

Leavenworth COVID And Beer Drinking Oddities

About this time, info on vaccine side effects was being discussed somewhere. We were aware that getting the shot did not mean getting to go without a mask. The idea that more than one shot would be required was out there. Somewhere along in there, people were being accused of spreading misinformation and having their social media accounts suspended if they questioned the government version of COVID protocols.

Before the internet and social media-

If different people selected different churches to attend, or they decided to attend no church at all, was this because of misinformation?

Americans were never meant to agree on matters of a personal nature.

Back into wait and see and never did get the shots.

We were aware that some employers required vaccines, but employees were still getting sick and in some cases facilities were shut down because too many people on staff could not come to work or something like that.

I always wore a mask when entering a business, post office, etc. Always took it off when I stepped back outside. I never spent a day on lockdown. The term lockdown seemed to apply to people who were associated with an employer, school, or maybe a church that was shut down. None of that applied to me.

Every day I wanted to go out and visit a state park or go shopping, I was able to do so.

COVID restrictions handed down by WA

My personal preference would be to let business people make business decisions.

Let customers support or walk away from the businesses of their choosing.

Avoid one size fits all mandates. Mask required? Let the business owner decide. Make the whole thing voluntary, like a stop smoking, or wear your seatbelt campaign.

WA COVID Oddities

Do property taxes go down because fleets of school buses sat idle and students remained at home? Any questions from newspeople?

Dining in tents attached to restaurants.

Locating an Army Field Hospital in Seattle.

Earliest days of WA COVID concern: We were told that COVID-19 was a life and death concern requiring regular people to stay home from work and school while marijuana and booze sales were designated as essential. This policy may have made people wonder about the science here.

Marijuana and booze sales roll on:

Special construction projects are approved:

May 12th, 2020

The construction project wasn’t delayed by the coronavirus pandemic; it was considered essential since it was state funded.”

Got it.

The state took money from some people, and gave it to some other people.

If your construction crew is working on a project based on any sort of voluntary exchange or honest demand for services, you might have to stay home for a while.

Some random thoughts and questions:

Anytime there is a plane crash, a loss at sea, or an industrial accident, a thorough investigation takes place. Lessons learned are used to prevent future events.

Mass shootings seem to go straight from breaking news of the event to scenes of memorials near where the event happened, interviews of victim’s family members and statements from various politicians. The crime scene investigation seems not to be a priority for the press. If we wait for an entire year, will that be enough time to ask questions?

People who are interested in having questions asked and people who want clarification and better information seem to be scolded/shamed or accused of advancing conspiracy theories.

The press should be out asking questions all of the time.

Here are some questions we’d like to see newspeople ask:

LE authorities are very good about showing off what they have seized after a major drug bust.

Will we ever see what 58 magazines and 1,657 rounds of ammunition looks like, even if we wait for 12 months?

How much space would 58 magazines and 1,657 rounds of ammunition take up? What is the weight of 58 magazines and 1,657 rounds of ammunition? Looks like about 13 pounds of ammo.

13 pounds of ammo could be manageable. Seems like 58 magazines might be bulky.

Looks like we are told the Texas school shooter crashed his vehicle, regained his composure, and then moved this load across the road and into the school on foot?

The War on Terror has prompted law enforcement authorities to calm the public by looking into the future and announcing that no credible threat exists.

No ‘credible threat’ but full Boston Police call-up for Boston Marathon Monday

“There’s no “credible threat” to the upcoming Boston Marathon, authorities say as they nonetheless call up all available Boston cops and continue to talk to New York City authorities following the terrifying attack there.”

“Long said there’s no “credible threat” to the marathon at this point, though he said the BPD will continue to communicate with federal, state and other local law-enforcement entities and look at intelligence reports.”

Zero questions from newspeople on how intelligence reports were used to any advantage in the April 12, 2022, NYC mass shooting event.

Love to see newspeople show some initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Our questions appear in bold type below. We require no federal grant money in order to ask these questions.

Basic public policy questions newspeople will not ask:

What role did a post 911 surveillance state (fusion centers, license scanners, Homeland Security grant money, monitoring of e-mails, text messages, & social media sites, no fly/terror watch lists, Real ID, tracking of cell phones, etc.) play in preventing the April 12, 2022 NYC subway shooting?

What role did a $49.8 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security play in preventing the April 12, 2022 NYC subway shooting?

No Credible Threat?

If the good guys can tell what the bad guys will do before they do it-surely, these powerful crime fighting tools will be used to shut down gang and cartel activity, heroin trafficking, bank robberies, mass casualty shootings, etc.

Where was the threat forecast prior to the April 12, 2022 NYC subway shooting?

Voting is highly emphasized in American culture. Asking questions related to public policy takes a lower priority.

Are newspeople forbidden to ask questions related to Homeland Security funding and performance?

Gun Control?

Why do newspeople avoid reporting on, and asking questions on the efficacy of past gun control measures?

School teachers and newspeople are OK with promoting this urban legend.

Local press:

Hometown pride running high. High enough to stop asking questions?

“For the past couple of years, the Whidbey News-Times paid the insurance for the Veterans Day Parade, about $200, because it was a small way of saying thank you to the men and women who sacrificed so that we may have our liberties, including our Freedom of Speech.”

Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?

Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?

The US Armed Forces – A Giant Civil Rights Organization?

The Washington State more than 10 round magazine ban is another of many examples where freedoms may come & go-completely unrelated to military operations/US Troops in distant lands, or the Sound of Freedom.

The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.

In some cases, the US Armed Forces provide for our security. That’s as good as it gets.

In terms of American rights and freedoms- The Dept. of Defense has no more say than the Dept. of Agriculture.

The issue is not limited to any single platform, public personality or media outlet.

The general trend has been to suppress voices of dissent and provide news coverage that favors government agencies, departments and policies.

Love to see the press get out and interview people on various sides of any issue.

I want to know what various people are thinking on various issues.

Jan 3, 2022 KOMO News

Joe Rogan encourages move to new social media app after Twitter bans GOP lawmaker

Several comments here.

KOMO and some of the commenters make it more about personalities and less about what people think of ongoing information suppression.

Not too many years ago, American society was much less about information suppression.

Social media is big on it now.

Today, newspeople show a lack of initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

JFK speaks about the role of the press and voices of dissent in a free society:

Today, TV newspeople tend to report only one side of the story.

Much of what we get today is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is.

A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

I’d be more interested in paying (again) for a local paper subscription if there was more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

Elimination of reader comments works against the idea of paying for an online subscription.

Manage it, don’t ban it. Online comment sections

No hate speech, insults, threats, foul language, attacking other commenters, etc. These are rules that make sense.

Eliminating the opportunity for all to follow some basic rules and comment is information suppression.

There’s always something to learn or think about from the points others make in the comment section.

Over the years, I’ve seen some really good points brought up in the comments section. Manage it, don’t ban it.

I am interested in living in a free and honest society.

Political parties and personalities are not as interesting as what stays the same no matter who is elected to office.

Politics seems to be very much about political personalities and group identities and very little on news reporting and discussion about what the major parties stand for or believe in.

There is a chunk of public policy that both major parties seem to be OK with:

Undeclared Wars

Both major parties seem to be OK with undeclared wars.

Love to see the press find out from elected officials how sending US Troops to Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, etc., is somehow defending the constitution.

Podcast 9 Defending The Constitution?

Never Forget-

The US Armed Forces were irrelevant in defending American rights and freedoms, our physical security, & The Constitution on 911.

Ditto for all other federal agencies and departments.

The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911.

We haven’t won a war since.

The Dept. of Defense has a truly poor track record with undeclared wars. This record goes back to 1949, the year DOD was established.

Wasteful and ineffective Homeland Security spending

A $49.8 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security that fails to keep cartel product from showing up in all 50 states.

This may trigger a Trump/Biden debate, but be honest, cartels remain in business no mater who is in the White House. The US Dept. of Homeland Security was created in the aftermath of 911. Is there any President since that time who was able to keep cartel product from arriving all over the US?

Pre-Biden:

The media seems to be run mostly by the D side of politics, certainly not by constitutional conservatives.

What are some constitutional conservative views on undeclared wars?

What are some constitutional conservative views on federal prohibition of marijuana?

What are some constitutional conservative views on treating 18-20 year old adults as second class citizens?

Alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and firearms restrictions are in place for 18-20 year old adults. Is there any state where recreational marijuana laws remove prohibition for adults at age 18?

Both major parties promote the idea that US troops are sent to distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms.

While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.

Out this past week to get some clams. First time in many years. Last outings were in the Oak Bay area, where I had a couple favorite spots that were healthy and had an abundant crop of clams.

This past week-

Grays Harbor County

Washington Coast

Good Morning

Around Low Tide

I lived for several years in an area that featured year-round recreational shellfish closures due to sewage treatment outfalls.

Summer 2021 update:

The text “This beach is within the closure area for a sewage treatment plant outfall and is unsafe for recreational shellfish harvesting.” has been removed by WDFW for beaches at Coupeville, the north side of Penn Cove at Monroe Landing and Oak Harbor.

In its place:

“Health status: Closed by Biotoxin and Pollution”

Sewage treatment plant outfall has been changed to pollution. Biotoxin is a seasonal status.

Several Island County beaches remain closed all year for recreational shellfish harvest.

A year-round closure seems significant, but the WA State Dept. of Health does not provide specific info on why each beach is closed. The word pollution is as close as we get to understanding what is going on.

View the closed beach list here.

The WA State Dept. of Health once made more of an effort to tell the story of why a beach was closed by posting red signs at the beach for all to see.

Earlier this year, a sign remained posted at Coupeville and Monroe Landing warning of a sewage drain pipe.

Image above:

Coupeville

Image above:

Are the two signs above still in place?

Why was the text changed on the WDFW pages?

Has anyone ever seen the Puget Sound area press ask questions about Whidbey water quality impacted by sewage treatment plant outfalls?

Has anyone ever seen any government agency, elected official or volunteer organization seeking answers related to one or more sewage treatment plants sending unsafe product into the waters near Whidbey Island?

Love to see school teachers provide lessons on how American culture is good for dividing adults up into groups of first and second-class citizens.

Each November, school teachers across America host Veterans Day assemblies– and promote the idea that The Troops are in distant lands- fighting for American rights and freedoms.

Growing up in the 60s & 70s- veterans were all around- church, school, Boy Scout leaders, family, the neighborhood, etc. It was all just an average thing. These folks weren’t seen as a separate part of American society.

People weren’t stepping over to say “Thanks for your service” to my Dad- who did time in the Navy in the 50s- but looked just like anyone else out in public.

These guys weren’t lining up for free dinner promotions marketed by major restaurant chains.

Veteran’s Day 2014:

Huge number of comments Re: what sort of ID is proper to get free & discounted stuff-

Local press:

“For the past couple of years, the Whidbey News-Times paid the insurance for the Veterans Day Parade, about $200, because it was a small way of saying thank you to the men and women who sacrificed so that we may have our liberties, including our Freedom of Speech.”

Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?

Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?

Military Town – Hometown Pride

September 27, 2019 Whidbey News-Times

Sound Off: Freedom doesn’t come free, and it’s sometimes noisy

“…the men and women of the armed forces guarantee our freedom…”

While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20. Can elected officials of any party or any member of the press help us to understand the militarized version of freedom here?

Did the Joint Chiefs of Staff send The Troops to safeguard American freedoms?

Was it the Viet Cong that set up laws in 16 US states to prohibit interracial marriage?

Congressman Derek Kilmer:

Wars are for freedom and democracy.

Glorification of military service / total nonsense:

WA Secretary of State

Our right to vote has always been protected by the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces.”

If a right to vote has always been protected by the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, how come women were not allowed full voting rights at the end of WWI?

Why the need for a 1965 Voting Rights Act if overseas military operations somehow secured voting rights?

If a right to vote is protected by the US Armed Forces, what becomes of that right when the US leaves Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc., without a victory?

Men Died For the Right to Vote?

Right To Vote Linked To Military Operations/US Troops in Distant Lands?

The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.

In some cases, the US Armed Forces provide for our security. That’s as good as it gets.

In terms of American rights and freedoms- The Dept. of Defense has no more say than the Dept. of Agriculture.

Legal marijuana, concealed carry of handguns, semi automatic rifle sales, federal minimum drinking age, sports betting, voting rights, bump stock baninterracial marriage, gay marriage, tobacco sales, open container laws, etc.

None of these are linked in any way with The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Troops, The Dept. of Defense or the outcome of military operations overseas.

As the decades of undeclared/unwon wars stack up (The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.) the greater the cultural urge to glorify people who do, or did time in uniform.

If there is an honest reason to send people away into decades of undeclared/unwon wars overseas let’s hear all about it.

Just Be Honest.

Stop with the glorification of undeclared/unwon wars in distant lands.

Love to see the press, school teachers, sports announcers and politicians come clean on how any of this was linked to American rights and freedoms or defending the constitution.

Leaving Afghanistan – Lies About American Rights And Freedoms

Several federal holidays feature a theme related to the idea that the troops are sent to distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms.

Love to see more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Newspeople show a lack of initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

Today, it seems as if the press promotes whatever message is handed down by elected officials and government agencies.

Voices of dissent, and their social media accounts, are suppressed.

This whole structure brings government messages into question.

JFK speaks about the role of the press and voices of dissent in a free society:

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support from subscription and advertising sales.

Got it.

I’d be more interested in paying (again) for a local paper subscription if there was more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

Elimination of reader comments works against the idea of paying for an online subscription.

Manage it, don’t ban it. Online comment sections

Grew up in the 70s.

Seems like the press was better at asking questions back then.

Today:

We are the very best at militarized pageantry for pro sports events.

Newspeople play the role of federal public affairs staff as authorities prepare for the Super Bowl.

Sorry, no time for newspeople to ask:

Did the advantage of US air power allow the undeclared wars in Iraq or Afghanistan to be prevented, won or shut down?

US fighter jet aircraft have been able to strike targets in what wars won by the US?

Alternative Media

We are big fans of Independent/alternative media here at Oak Bay Starfish.

The family friendly, hometown pride-oriented local small town papers and TV news folks are more welcome to do interviews related to public policy. Unfortunately, they seem to have moved away from asking questions.

I’m not going to argue with you.

Instead of waiting for school teachers to teach about individual rights and limited government authority, waiting on the press to ask questions or courts to handle cases, these guys go out and update us with a quick reality check:

Operating A Camera In A Public Place

Sports Writers

Love to see general public policy, foreign policy, etc. reported on by sports writers.

Sept. 18, 2021 Seattle Times

After two frustrating losses, the dam finally breaks in Washington’s 52-3 win over Arkansas State

“Without a doubt, there is work to be done.

But after eight quarters of catastrophes, this felt like progress.

There needs to be more as Washington enters Pac-12 play.”

Regular newspeople don’t seem to have permission to ask hard questions.

Sports writers are OK with being critical of coaches, teams, players, the rule book, the league, referees, team owners, when the season starts and ends, etc.

Are people who work for newspapers and TV news folks given permission to go out and to do interviews related to public policy? If elected officials and people who run government agencies are not available to be interviewed, that should become the story.

Recommendation for newspeople:

Interview people from various sides of any given issue.

If you are a newspaper struggling for subscription and advertising dollars, figure out how to use the web to post videos of these interviews to bring more attention to your media outlet.

Early winter morning – Point No Point

Sadly, the Fresnel lens has gone dark.

Local info here.

There has been a lot going on in the news. I’d like to move away from it, but the big stories have pulled me in over the past few days.

A man on the moon in 1969 was a proud American moment.

Since that time, both major parties have taken turns in power and have squandered credibility that would help in the current situation.

We were told we needed to send troops to Vietnam.

Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

Some may have become skeptical along the way.

Love to see the press, school teachers, sports announcers and politicians come clean on how any of this was linked to American rights and freedoms or defending the constitution.

Leaving Afghanistan – Lies About American Rights And Freedoms

The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911.

We haven’t won a war since.

The Dept. of Defense has a truly poor track record with undeclared wars. This record goes back to 1949, the year DOD was established.

4 Stories The Puget Sound Press Will Not Question Or Report On

I do not speak out against vaccines or anyone who takes them. Ditto for mask wearing indoors or out.

My concerns are not specific to any political party, personality or group identity.

Before the internet and social media-

If different people selected different churches to attend, or they decided to attend no church at all, was this because of misinformation?

Americans were never meant to agree on matters of a personal nature.

FDA Approved

Stopped by a WA bar on Friday. Masks must be worn to enter. Masks come off inside and people carry on as always. Even for people with a completely neutral mind, much of all this seems like just going through the motions.

My personal preference would be for business owners to make business decisions. Customers would support or walk away from the businesses of their choosing. If people want to sit at the bar and drink, let’s leave that option open.

A One Size Fits All Society?

TV newspeople tend to report one side of the story. Would TV newspeople (prior to the protest phase) be willing to interview people from various sides of an issue?

A large number of news stories Re: parents showing up at back to school protests tell us that different people believe different things.

Allowing people to voluntarily opt in or out may ease the tension-similar to the way people select the church they attend, or chose to attend no church at all.

People who wish to wear masks and get vaccinated may do so at any time.

None of these images belong to me. I did not create them. They were shared on the web.
