Love to see newspeople ask: Is there any shortage of lodging facilities in this community?
The Press
Much of what we get today is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.
American freedoms come and go. None of the above are linked in any way with The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Troops, The Dept. of Defense or the outcome of military operations overseas.
School children are taught about a free enterprise system. They grow up to find out that the federal government will tell them what kind of shower head they must install in the bathroom, and what type of gas can they must buy for their lawn mower.
Did hostile forces in distant lands attempt to replace US consumer demand with government demand and end the free enterprise system?

Mayor Day,
While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.
“The US military? A fraud, a money funnel to the arms industry, a laboratory for social experimentation, a tool for wrecking countries that we do not need to wreck. Do you believe I exaggerate? Think about it. Carefully.”
“Meanwhile Biden sends billions to Ukraine, lots of billions, our billions, while America crumbles within. A corrupt, senescent, second-rate lawyer mysteriously empowered to bankrupt his own country to benefit a corrupt, dirtball country of no importance to America.”
“How is this possible? Why do Americans tolerate it?”
Honest and meaningful ideas stand up to questioning and discussion.
The War on Terror has prompted law enforcement authorities to calm the public by looking into the future and announcing that no credible threat exists.
Love to see newspeople show some initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.
Our questions appear in bold type below. We require no federal grant money in order to ask these questions.
No Credible Threat?
If the good guys can tell what the bad guys will do before they do it-surely, these powerful crime fighting tools will be used to shut down gang and cartel activity, heroin trafficking, bank robberies, mass casualty shootings, etc.
“The Transportation Security Administration anticipates a record number of travelers will be screened through security checkpoints this Fourth of July holiday weekend.”
“However, TSA says people can prepare for a smooth travel experience by keeping some simple reminders top of mind.”
“What goes on at airports is not security. It is Security Theater. When the government’s own agents try to smuggle “weapons” aboard airliners to test the system, they succeed ninety-five percent of the time.”
“Further, a terrorist doesn’t need to get aboard an airliner to blow up spectacularly. At many airports, hundreds of people line up at ticket counters during peak hours. A carry-on bag of explosive would easily create enough slaughter to shut down air travel and to make international headlines for weeks.”

Cartel drug traffickers are frequently successful at what they do. If terrorists were just as interested in entering the US- it appears that federal departments and agencies would have no way to stop them.

Washington State ferry passengers are advised via PA system not to leave backpacks or packages unattended during ferry crossings.
Meanwhile- on the car deck- cars, trucks, vans, commercial vehicles, etc. are left unattended during ferry crossings.
If the Oklahoma City bomber rolls onto the ferry- how does the SWAT team help out an hour later?
Maybe security personnel are present at some specific terminals each day. Over the past 20 years, dozens of round trip crossings from various terminals indicate that in many cases- no security screening takes place prior to boarding ferries.

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, it feels like the people who run the Pentagon specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.
The people of Minnesota need more applicants to maintain a place to live and a regular job in their hometown area when they are not doing time in foreign lands helping DOD with undeclared/unwon wars and missions completely unrelated to their home state.
A few decades back, people might think of the National Guard as one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer plus a way to support your home state by being ready to get called out for floods, fires, natural disasters, civil unrest, etc. Maybe a way to help the next state over if they needed it.
Americans live in a society that can’t stop bragging about freedom, thanking the troops for freedoms, fighting wars for freedoms, staging military jet flyovers at sporting events for freedom, etc.
Both major parties have had a hand in reducing American freedoms as the decades roll on.

If a right to vote has always been protected by the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, how come women were not allowed full voting rights at the end of WWI?
Why the need for a 1965 Voting Rights Act if overseas military operations somehow secured voting rights?
If a right to vote is protected by the US Armed Forces, what becomes of that right when the US leaves Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc., without a victory?

Took a look on the web to see if there is a post 911 history of maritime “cross-border activity” on Whidbey & could not find anything. If anyone has info, please post in comments.
Questions for newspeople:
Has the Island County Homeland Security-funded patrol boat been able to intercept any inbound fentanyl?
Has the Island County Homeland Security-funded patrol boat been involved in any arrest or seizure related in any way to the US/Canada border?

Americans do not live in a free and honest society.
In a free and honest society, newspeople would be asking questions related to public policy all of the time.
Voting is highly emphasized in American culture. Asking questions related to public policy takes a lower priority.
Has anyone ever seen the Puget Sound area press ask questions about Whidbey water quality impacted by sewage treatment plant outfalls?
Has anyone ever seen any government agency, elected official or volunteer organization seeking answers related to one or more sewage treatment plants sending unsafe product into the waters near Whidbey Island?
“And for those that do raise their right hand and swear an oath to serve, it’s important to publicly thank and recognize them for that choice. Young people notice how society treats members of various professions. Honoring High School seniors at their graduations and related ceremonies for enlisting in the military goes a long way to changing how Americans view service in the military.”
Our Take:
Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, it feels like the people who run the Pentagon specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.
Understandable why young people and their parents and grandparents would take a dim view on all this.
Guessing that veterans or service members invited to talk to students about how the military has helped them will not question misinformation about The Troops getting sent to distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms.
The Dept. of Defense has a truly poor track record with undeclared wars. This record goes back to 1949, the year DOD was established. Teach and discuss what American freedoms were threatened by hostile forces in distant lands since the US Dept. of Defense was established in 1949.
Whatever happened to the formal congressional declaration of war?
This would be the time to hear from elected leaders and top generals Re: lessons learned on all the issues that have doomed the Department of Defense track record for winning wars since DOD was established in 1949.

“A massive brawl broke out on a parade ground at Fort Gordon in Augusta one afternoon last fall, when about 70 teenage recruits of the Georgia National Guard’s Youth Challenge Academy slugged it out. Some used homemade weapons, including metal shanks, crudely sharpened toothbrushes and tube socks filled with metal padlocks.”
Both major parties have taken turns in power over the past 40 years or so. For sure, there is a chunk of public policy that has become worse, not better.
Big campaign season coming up:
June 11, 2023 By Andrew J. Bacevich The Politics of Avoidance
On the debt and security, we ignore inconvenient facts.
“…to honor the fallen warriors who have died to protect our nation, our freedoms, and our way of life.”
“But I have a serious question that may make you uncomfortable: Did they really die protecting those things?”
“If you believe that every war we have ever started, engaged in, or supported was just, then your answer will be a resounding “Yes!” But I think more and more American are beginning to realize they have been lied to about many of these wars, especially all the wars the came out of the so-called “War on Terror.” Many of those Americans being war veterans just like myself.”
“Bacevich warns that Americans’ inability to be self-critical, to dissect and understand the litany of disasters that have followed on the heels of Vietnam, including decades of fruitless warfare in the Middle East, will have terrible consequences for us and much of the rest of the globe.”
The best way to honor sacrifice is to seek an end to war and militarism
From 2015:
Each November, school teachers across America host Veterans Day assemblies– and promote the idea that The Troops are in distant lands- fighting for American rights and freedoms.
Growing up in the 60s & 70s- veterans were all around- church, school, Boy Scout leaders, family, the neighborhood, etc. It was all just an average thing. These folks weren’t seen as a separate part of American society.
In the 60s & 70s I never attended a Veterans Day assembly at school.
There were none.
Today, in Washington State, these assemblies are mandatory.
Back in the 60s and 70s there were probably enough veterans around to remove most of the mystique, or maybe those veterans thought it was all just an average thing and did not want to be seen as a separate part of American society, or get head of the line parking spots over at the grocery store.
People weren’t stepping over to say “Thanks for your service” to my Dad- who did time in the Navy in the 50s- but looked just like anyone else out in public.
These guys weren’t lining up for free dinner promotions marketed by major restaurant chains.
Where are the veterans who don’t want free meals, discounts, head of the line privileges at the airport, etc.
A society that phased out Armistice day in the 1950s. A society where decades after the lessons of Vietnam, it feels like the people who run the Pentagon specialize in undeclared/unwon wars. A society in 2023, that can’t stay out of or win undeclared wars, but has come to offer up a big Memorial Day freebies for veterans marketing campaign. Way to go guys.
This may be some sort of post-Vietnam guilt at work. The guilt doesn’t seem to work towards ending decades of undeclared/unwon wars in distant lands.
Do the companies that offer free Memorial Day 2023 chow advocate for phasing out undeclared wars?
A society where a giant flag ritual at the next ball game will make it all good.

The US federal government now promotes the idea that people who did time in uniform are all about making a list of free deals they can score during one of several holidays honoring those who were once considered routine Americans, but now are seen as a separate part of American society:
“Comments are turned off. Learn more”
It turns out that I am OK with whatever veterans and Americans in general want to do with their time during federal holidays. I am OK with whatever businesses want to do with their marketing plans.
I put together my thoughts on all this back in 2012:
Did foreign terrorists set up a land of the free holding pattern where alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and firearms restrictions are in place for 18-20 year old adults?
Did hostile forces from distant lands set up transgender messaging at theme parks? Seems more like adult content for Mardi Gras in New Orleans than something for family/child friendly events?
Did foreign terrorists mandate what sort of toilet you must install in your home?
Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?
Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?
Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?
As the decades of undeclared/unwon wars stack up (The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.) the greater the cultural urge to glorify people who do, or did time in uniform.
If there is an honest reason to send people away into decades of undeclared/unwon wars overseas let’s hear all about it.
Why do we pretend that the US Armed Forces function as some sort of giant civil rights organization?
American freedoms come and go. None of the above are linked in any way with The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Troops, The Dept. of Defense or the outcome of military operations overseas.
Did foreign invaders get members of the press to play the role of federal public affairs staff as authorities prepare for the Super Bowl?
TV newspeople perform like paid actors reading a script:
The US Dept. of Defense is the very best at militarized pageantry for pro sports events.
“As a former child I can state 100% that a camera wouldn’t have scared me but a masked blue line flag man throwing things and yelling would have terrified me!”
The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.
In some cases, the US Armed Forces provide for our security. That’s as good as it gets.
In terms of American rights and freedoms- The Dept. of Defense has no more say than the Dept. of Agriculture.
The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911. We haven’t won a war since.
It feels like the people who run the Pentagon specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.
Any college or pro football coach would have been fired a dozen times over for what DOD has done with the US Armed Forces during the fake GWOT era.
Homeland Security Is A Scam
Huge US Dept. of Homeland Security budgets after 911 and more cartel drugs than ever arriving in Hometown, USA?
18-20 Year Old Adults Are Seen As Second Class Citizens
A society where, in addition to freedoms possibly enjoyed by all adults, those who are 18-20 years old are placed in a land of the free holding pattern.
Alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and firearms restrictions are in place for 18-20 year old adults. Is there any state where recreational marijuana laws remove prohibition for adults at age 18?
Doesn’t seem to fit with a society that can’t stop bragging about freedom, thanking the troops for freedoms, fighting wars for freedoms, staging military jet flyovers at sporting events for freedom, etc.
While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.

Instead of waiting for school teachers to teach about individual rights and limited government authority, waiting on the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, waiting on the press to ask questions, or courts to handle cases, these guys go out and update us with a quick reality check:
1:31 in the video below-
“Request denied, you’re dismissed.”
Request for the family friendly, hometown pride-oriented local small town papers and TV news folks:
In my small town, leaving the neighborhood often means driving past the fire station. It seems like several times a month, for different reasons, the US flag may be at half mast. When I was a child in the 60s and 70s, the flag would go to half mast on what seemed to be rare occasions. Now it seems routine.
KXLY in Spokane tells us at 1:08
“…behind every half-staff flag is a man or woman who laid down their life for our country.”
“…the tradition began centuries ago.”
KXLY,
Was the flag flown at half staff more than 58,000 times for individuals who lost their lives during the Vietnam War?
In reality, the flag is lowered for various occasions:

Consider the idea that lowering the flag on a routine basis may take away from the significance of the protocol. Over time, the flag may be seen as a political symbol, something like a Presidential Medal of Freedom that may have nothing to do with freedom.
Young people and their parents and grandparents may take a dim view on all this.

Recruiting crisis for Uncle Sam? Elected officials and top Pentagon Generals earned it.
General Knight tells us that people are uninformed about what the National Guard is and what it does.
Back during the Cold War era of the 1980s, the US Armed Forces seemed to be in good shape. Today, DOD struggles with recruiting difficulties. I have my own attitudes about all this.
“During the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq the services met their quotas, and that was with people dying and coming home missing limbs. What has changed? Young people see what a failure those wars were. Why fight for a govt that views them as pawns for their political whims and cuts out when all the Generals have been promoted and the companies made billions. Add in the cultural politicization of the military (changing base names and pronouns to name a few) and the pool of eligible people (which is still large) see the military not as honorable service but something to be avoided. Young people see a made up war in Ukraine coming soon as the administration keeps poking the Russians. The left has spent decades demonizing military service, now it is ok? People are smarter than that. A draft is way to avoid fixing the decline in our military and the politicization of its mission/people. Stop the cultural attack on the military ethos, hold accountable someone besides a Marine Major for the failure of the Iran/Iraq wars and stop promoting a war with Russia so Raytheon and Lockeed can make more money. You would see people join. I am a Naval Academy Graduate and served my country for 20 years in various jobs. I would sooner my sons work at a gas station than join today’s military.”
If TV newspeople showed up to ask why the people of Ohio needed National Guard services in distant lands, absent any military emergency, national emergency, draft, or declaration of war, would they be asked to leave the news conference?
Undeclared wars and a draft? Last time the two were mixed, it did not go well.
After the lessons of Vietnam, decades of undeclared/unwon wars. Has the DOD brand been damaged?
People are not interested in showing up.
A man on the moon in 1969 was a proud American moment.
Since that time, both major parties have taken turns in power and have squandered credibility that would help in the current situation.
We were told we needed to send troops to Vietnam.
Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
Some may have become skeptical along the way.
The military recruiting crisis was earned by the politicians, generals, and high ranking civilians who have been running the Pentagon over the past 30 years or so. The crisis is also upon us due to newspeople not asking questions going back to the time the Cold War ended.
The Chinese balloon that made it all the way to the Atlantic really did stir some emotion.
Interesting that the catastrophic military failure of 911 worked out differently. That was the time the nation pulled together. People flew the flag again.
Show up early to wait in line, squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube and show your REAL ID at the airport.
What keeps the terrorists of the GWOT from creating a disruption at the back end of the screening line?
Zero questions from newspeople.
All these special IDs seem to play no role in keeping cartels from moving product into Hometown, USA. Would the DEA be out of work if a giant US Dept. of Homeland Security was able to keep cartel product from showing up in all 50 states?
Security Theater
It’s all widely accepted by the public and the press. Watch for a big Dept. of Homeland Security show of force prior to and during the Super Bowl, and another military jet flyover at the opening of the game as reminder of all this. Cheering fans signal acceptance.
It’s a big government operation. After the catastrophic military failure on 911, the response was big DOD budgets and a US Dept. of Defense that continues a decades-long tradition of not being able to stay out of or win undeclared wars in distant lands. A military jet flyover at the opening of the game is an annual reminder of all this.
911 was a reminder that bad people might try to come here and do bad things. DHS was created, and the old routine of going to have lunch in Canada with only your standard driver’s license was done away with.
Love to see newspeople interview the US Dept. of Homeland Security & ask:
Are passports/enhanced/REAL IDs effective in keeping cartel drugs out of the US?
Standard driver’s licenses have not been accepted at the border since 2009.
Today, a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security fails to create any shortage of opioids in the Puget Sound area. A major show of force prior to and during the big game reminds the public of the impressive capabilities of this giant federal agency. Newspeople will avoid asking questions on Homeland Security funding and performance.
TV newspeople skip asking questions and play the role of federal public affairs staff instead:
The folks who can’t keep fentanyl trafficking cartels from moving product into various US communities are keeping the Super Bowl safe.
No Credible Threat
The War on Terror has prompted law enforcement authorities to calm the public by looking into the future and announcing that no credible threat exists.
Newspeople play along by not asking questions.

Life wasn’t meant to change after the big Saddam Hussein & Osama bin Laden takedowns.
How do you keep terrorists and their weapons out by checking retail items after they show up at retail locations inside the US?
Did the confiscated items make it through any port of entry?
As always, zero questions from newspeople. Last year:
Each year, at the Super Bowl, the US Dept. of Homeland Security promotes their own image Re: preventing criminal activity. Why do these impressive capabilities fail to keep meth and heroin trafficking cartels from moving product into the US?
US jet aircraft have been able to strike targets in what wars won by the US?
The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.
