US foreign policy can be hard to explain & understand.
Freedom isn’t free?
If a house is prevented from burning, is it because firefighters protect our rights and freedoms?
Think of your local fire dept.- it serves a clear-cut purpose, no need for people to repeat phrases or slogans in order to justify its existence.
We don’t claim that firefighters protect our rights and freedoms- as if they are part of some kind of civil rights organization. No need for a parade of fire trucks at the next football game to maintain the proper attitudes of support for the work these people do.
State-run media update:
Air Force Leads DoD Support of Super Bowl LI
“This year, it’s the 70th anniversary of the Air Force, so they will lead the way, said Christine S. Thompson, a sports outreach specialist in the office of the assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs.”
“The Air Force turns 70 this year, and what better way to celebrate our birthday than to have the Thunderbirds do the flyover for the Super Bowl?” said Katie Spencer, the sports outreach program manager for the Air Force.
Sports outreach specialist, sports outreach program manager? It’s a full-time job at the Pentagon to craft & send the right messages through military pageantry at major sporting events.
Love to see newspeople ask:
The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949. How many US wars have been won since then?

Heroin-trafficking cartels move product into local communities while we’re in a life and death struggle with some folks in Yemen? Maybe our sports outreach professionals can help to make sense of all this?
Five Presidential Administrations have had their hands on the wheel in Iraq. The US has been bombing there- going back to 1991. Certainly, the current refugee/travel restriction situation is tied to a post Desert Shield militarized foreign policy.
A giant flag ritual at the next ball game will make it all good.
