Is There Really A Drought Emergency in Washington State?

“Looking at observations and predictions, this drought declaration appears to be unwarranted and in error.”

There is no water emergency, not even close. Not even in the neighborhood.

State officials pushing this narrative are doing a profound disservice to our state.

As expected, the Seattle Times Climate Lab gave this “emergency” big play in the paper today.”

The Seattle Times is rapidly losing any credibility as a source of reliable environmental information. Really unfortunate and very unnecessary.”

Great News on Free Trade!

by Jacob G. Hornberger

April 10, 2025

“It might well be the first time since I discovered libertarianism that a libertarian principle has gained such overwhelming favor and support from the American people. For the past few months, the mainstream press has been filled with editorials, commentaries, and op-eds favoring free trade.”

“In fact, it is phenomenal that the only people who are on the fringe on this issue are Trump and his loyal band of Trumpsters, who, like members of a cult, will support anything Trump does and come up with all sorts of arguments, no matter how inane and fallacious, to blindly support his statist policies and positions.”

“Freedom is not a privilege that comes from government. It preexists government. Government’s job is to protect this natural, God-given right, not destroy, control, regulate, or manage it.”

In this week’s Libertarian Angle, Jacob and Richard discuss the consequences of the tariff turmoil that President Trump has unleashed upon the world.

Image above: One I took years ago in late March – Skagit County

Not here to say that military benefits are inadequate. Just stick with whatever was offered when people signed up to stay on for multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and we’re good.

The US Dept. of Defense has really taken a dive since the 1980s. I’ll do a blog on that later.

Naval Hospital Bremerton in the news:

Decade of reductions at Naval Hospital Bremerton push out retirees, beneficiaries

Conor Wilson – Kitsap Sun April 3, 2025

“Over the last decade, the hospital has been gutted, leaving a major gap in the local health care sector and bogging down local providers. As large numbers of military retirees and beneficiaries are forced out of the military system, they increasingly find themselves searching for care in an overburdened civilian sector desperately short on providers and struggling to provide access to routine care.”

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray:

“This pattern of declining care and personnel mismanagement at one of the largest Naval bases in the nation suggests a lack of attention to the healthcare needs of servicemembers, veterans, and their families in Kitsap County.”

Naval Hospital Bremerton did not make a member of its leadership available for an interview as part of this story, despite multiple requests since late February.”

“Kitsap County has a shortage of primary care providers, with about half as many per capita as the state average in 2023, according to Washington Health Care Research Center.”

Ask A Recruiter

“Reductions at Naval Hospital Bremerton over the last decade come as the Department of Defense, the federal agency that runs the military health system, has reduced spending on health care. As part of a major realignment designed to shed costs, it has prioritized operational readiness for wartime missions and care for those on active duty over that of beneficiaries and retirees.”

“Civilian providers say they are increasingly shouldering the load left by the Navy. The result is worse access across the board for primary, maternal and specialty care for all residents, including those not connected to the military. Shortages are driving up hospital bills, as more people depend on emergent care, and likely leading to worse outcomes for Kitsap patients.”

“Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, who own St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale and St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, has seen “increased demand as military health care facilities have adjusted their offerings over the years,” St Michael President Chad Melton wrote in an email.”

“…military health care facilities have adjusted their offerings…”

Politician speak will take you to the highest levels.

Thousands of men and women who did time in uniform over the past 25 years did one or more tours in places like Syria, Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. Some stayed for 20.

Now, these people are told that the benefits they thought they were earning when reenlisting for another tour are going away in order to save money. WTF?

Same country that sent big cash to Ukraine several times over in 2024.

Today, Uncle Sam needs more people to volunteer to go to far away places and maybe never come back again.

Good luck with your US Armed Forces recruiting crisis.

Everett’s electric bus fleet faces setback, city turns to retrofitted diesel buses for now

by Joel Moreno, KOMO News Mar 15th 2025

“Ongoing problems with a series of electric buses convinced Everett city leaders to scrap that part of the transit fleet and sell the vehicles.”

“Reliability issues and difficulty getting replacement parts drove the decision, which led to a city council vote earlier this week.”

Everett Transit owns nine of these buses and there are so many problems that right now only four are still in service. The city does have a backup plan and is looking to purchase reconfigured diesel buses so there are no gaps in service.”

“The electric buses to be sold are made by a company called Proterra, which went bankrupt two years ago.”

Trump’s Use of Immigration Controls to Destroy Free Speech

by Jacob G. Hornberger

March 13, 2025

“Let’s remind ourselves of some important points about free speech.”

Freedom of speech is not a privilege that comes from the federal government or even from the Constitution, which is the document that called the federal government into existence. It is a fundamental, natural, God-given right that precedes the existence of government. As Jefferson pointed out in the Declaration of Independence, liberty adheres to all people, not just to American citizens. Thus, the First Amendment doesn’t give people freedom of speech; instead, it prohibits the federal government from infringing on freedom of speech.”

“Freedom of speech entails the right to say whatever a person wants, no matter how ugly, despicable, and unpopular it might be. When people are free to say only what is officially approved by government, they are not free. It is only when people are free to say anything they want that they can be considered free.”

“Thus, everyone — Americans and foreigners alike — have the absolute right under genuine principles of freedom of speech to criticize and condemn Israel, Jews, the Vatican, Catholics, Muslims, blacks, Italians, Asians, gays, or anyone else to their heart’s content. They have the right to question the Holocaust and claim that Hitler didn’t kill one single Jew. They have the right to question the legality by which the state of Israel was formed and also the right to question the legality by which the United States acquired the northern half of Mexico.”

“In fact, people also have the right to advocate terrorism, mass killings, and serial killings and to openly praise terrorists, mass killers, and serial killers. They have the right to praise the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the U.S. invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. They also have the right to celebrate the U.S. government’s torture of people at Guantanamo Bay and the CIA’s and Pentagon’s state-sponsored assassinations of both Americans and foreigners.”

JFK speaks about the role of the press and voices of dissent in a free society:

For years, I have wondered why elected officials and high level DOD civilians speak of the US Armed Forces as if they function as some sort of giant civil rights organization. Both major parties are in on it. In the US, we probably brag about freedom more than anywhere else on the planet.

The freedom talk is always sounding good for federal holidays and overseas military operations.

Real life:

Certainly, Americans do not live in a free and honest society.

Conspiracy Theory?

Maybe there would be less in the way of conspiracy theories if people felt like they were properly informed.

Where is the press in all this?

Love to see more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post the statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Regular newspeople don’t seem to have permission to ask hard questions.

Sports is different.

After each game, the press has access to coaches and players. All sorts of information is available all of the time.

Sports writers are OK with being critical of coaches, teams, players, the rule book, the league, referees, team owners, when the season starts and ends, etc.

In government, it is fully understood that people will not have access to complete information through everyday channels.

Ever hear of a Freedom of Information Act Request in sports? How about a denied FOIA request?

Ever see a pro football coach or quarterback refer reporters to his press secretary for answers? Presidents do so on a daily basis. Professionals are hired to provide only the desired version of answers to questions.

Ever see a pro football coach or quarterback refer reporters to a public information officer for answers to questions?

The open attitude about sports reporting does not cross over to stories about the US Dept. of Homeland Security, big drug busts, The Troops, the War on Terror or local water quality impacted by sewage treatment plant outfalls.

Misinformation?

Today, crisis requires a one size fits all, guilty until proven innocent approach.

Today, it seems as if the press promotes whatever message is handed down by elected officials and government agencies.

Americans were never meant to agree on matters of a personal nature. This is why we have so many different churches here and people who opt out on attending services.

We were told we needed to send troops to Vietnam, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Some may have become skeptical along the way.

“My group and scientists from the University of Albany are now studying the meteorology of the LA wildfires earlier this month and have significant early results. At the American Meteorological Society meeting last week, I attended many wildfire meteorology sessions and talked to several colleagues who have actively studied such events. The LA fires were a topic of considerable discussion.”

“We have a good idea of what happened: an extreme/unusual Santa Ana event associated with severe downslope winds. In this blog, I will show you some early simulations and explain why this event occurred.”

“I will also describe why climate change did not play a significant role.”

“There are several media outlets and climate activists that are suggesting that LA fires were the result of global warming or significantly enhanced by human-caused warming.”

“I am particularly troubled by the media pushing weather/climate theories that are untrue. A prime example is the unsupported claim that the Lahaina fire was associated with the passage of a hurricane to the south. This was proven to be false.”

Why the LA Wildfires Have Little to With Drought or Climate Change

“Some climate activists and media outlets are claiming the drought or climate change were major contributors to the recent wildfires around Los Angeles (see sample below)”

“These claims can easily be shown to be false.”

“Once the wildfires got to the homes or burning embers reaches the homes, the homes THEMSELVES supplied the fuels.”

“One house ignited the next.”

“This is very similar to the situations of others major urban wildfires, such as the Camp Fire (Paradise, CA), Lahaina (Maui), and the Marshal Fire (Superior, CO). Homes flammability has little to do with weather conditions. But poorly constructed homes (e.g., flammable roofs, no screens to stop embers moving into home spaces) are major problems.”

“There is No Trend of Less Precipitation in Southern California”

“Very strong video and photographic evidence indicated the Los Angeles Eaton fire, which resulted in the most deaths was due to a faulty power line. Clearly, this transmission line was not de-energized even with the forecast of severe Santa Ana winds.”

Seattle minimum wage hike taking toll on small businesses

“As of Jan. 1, Seattle’s minimum wage increased by 79 cents, reaching $20.76 per hour for all businesses, regardless of size.”

Recommendation for a free society-

Stay away from one size fits all mandates.

Let business people make business decisions.

Let customers support or walk away from the businesses of their choosing.

Find 10 successful people.

Ask them if they ever worked for min. wage.

Ask them why they no longer are on it.

Dining Out

Used to enjoy eating out. This feeling was good for decades and in multiple states. 80s, 90s, all the way up until COVID.

Tipping? No problem.

Really do not go out much anymore.

Why?

Expense, iffy experience, smaller portions, business has a hard time finding staff to show up, this leads to reduced quality of experience, etc.

From comments:

Minimum wage jobs are for entry level workers into the labor force, not intended to be a family supporting job. You work there for a while, learn to come to work on time, learn how to team up with fellow employees, learn to take orders from supervisors, learn to interact with the public etc. After you have accomplished this, then you can take that experience down the road to another business and get a better paying job. Each job you work should build up your skills so when you are an adult, you can get a decent paying job and support yourself.”

Love this comment.

I would add: Do not plan to live in a high cost area if you want the good life on minimum wage.

As I move about, I am mindful of the workers who set their own minimum wage. Who would that be?

People who work on overhead power lines. People who pump septic tanks, operate heavy equipment, work on tree cutting crews, work for the Puget Sound maritime industry, work at Costco, work as a plumber, work as an electrician, work as a Real Estate agent, drive long-haul trucks, work on oil rigs and work on commercial fishing boats.

Wonder what was happening at border crossing inspections during the 2 years these folks were under investigation. Do the good guys who made the local bust notify the good guys at the border about the weak links in their process?

Love to see newspeople ask:

Were federal authorities at the border notified of this ongoing investigation?

Did the drug traffickers get fast track screening at the border so as not to disrupt this ongoing investigation?

If the drug traffickers were given a pass at the border- would that have tipped them off as to the investigation- or would that have been seen as standard protocol?

Imagine LE authorities observe a shoplifter or bank robber in action. Instead of going in to make an arrest they back off and conduct an investigation that goes on for 2 years. What if they applied the same tactic Re: crimes involving arson, terrorism, child abuse, DUI, etc.

Has any city, county or state jurisdiction been able to cleanup their drug problem using these methods?

Today, it seems as if the press promotes whatever message is handed down by elected officials and government agencies.

Never newspeople asking:

How did the bad guys move product past US federal agents at border crossings and ports of entry before the problem arrived in local communities?

What is the utility of the Enhanced or REAL ID we are asked to carry?

Questions for newspeople to ask:

Have opioid lawsuits played any role in improving the situation?

How do cartels react to opioid lawsuits?

Has a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security created any shortage of opioids anywhere in the US?

Were US drug overdose death numbers higher before the US Dept. of Homeland Security was established (2002) or are the numbers higher with a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security in place? This giant federal agency now has more than two decades of experience and lessons learned in working to prevent cartel product from entering the US. More overdose deaths now, or before DHS?

The regulations primarily target large diesel and gas-powered motorhomes, including Class A and large Class C models, aligning with Washington’s goal to phase out new gasoline vehicle sales by 2035.”

As time goes on, the consumer choices we have are becoming more restricted by a combination of government and big business policies, not Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden or the next bad guy DOD will be going after in distant lands.

Governments at various levels are now in the habit of setting deadlines for new restrictions, bans and mandates.

Each November, school teachers across America host Veterans Day assemblies– and promote the idea to children that The Troops are in distant lands-fighting for American rights and freedoms-as if the US Armed Forces function as some sort of giant civil rights organization.

In Washington State, these assemblies are mandatory.

The VA tells teachers that The Troops are Defending Liberty and Freedom.

In the 60s & 70s I never attended a Veterans Day assembly at school.

There were none.

Probably enough veterans around to remove most of the mystique, or maybe those veterans thought it was all just an average thing and did not want to be seen as a separate part of American society, or get head of the line parking spots over at the grocery store. Maybe the concept of Armistice Day had not gone completely extinct.

Growing up in the 60s & 70s- veterans were all around- church, school, Boy Scout leaders, family, the neighborhood, etc. It was all just an average thing. These folks weren’t seen as a separate part of American society.

People weren’t stepping over to say “Thanks for your service” to my Dad- who did time in the Navy in the 50s- but looked just like anyone else out in public.

Both major parties are OK with federal prohibition of alcohol and tobacco for adults age 18-20.

No such thing the day I graduated from high school.

That was before decades of military operations for your freedoms.

These guys weren’t lining up for free dinner promotions marketed by major restaurant chains.

Love to see a student ask: If The Troops fight for your right to sit, stand, kneel, etc.-why were black people still riding at the back of the bus after the big WWII victory?

Love to see a student ask: If the wars aren’t won-how can they protect our freedom?

Love to see a student ask: Whatever happened to lessons about Armistice Day?

School children are taught about a free enterprise system. They grow up to find out that the federal government will tell them what kind of shower head they must install in the bathroom, and what type of gas can they must buy for their lawn mower.

Did hostile forces in distant lands attempt to replace US consumer demand with government demand and end the free enterprise system?

The idea that sending hometown troops to Africa would be linked in any way with keeping the people of Salisbury Maryland safe and free calls for more discussion.

Mayor Day,

While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.

Can you help us to understand the militarized version of freedom here?

December 21st 2019 KOMO News

Legal age to buy cigarettes, vapes raised to 21 nationwide

“Signed into law by President Donald Trump Friday as part of the new $1.4 trillion spending bill, a new measure prohibits the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21.”

The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.

In some cases, the US Armed Forces provide for our security. That’s as good as it gets.

In terms of American rights and freedoms- The Dept. of Defense has no more say than the Dept. of Agriculture.

Legal marijuana, concealed carry of handguns, semi automatic rifle sales, federal minimum drinking age, federal toilet regulations, sports betting, federal gas can regulations/free enterprise system,
voting rights, bump stock baninterracial marriage, gay marriage, tobacco sales, open container laws, etc.

Freedoms come and go. None of the above are linked in any way with The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Troops, The Dept. of Defense or the outcome of military operations overseas.

Why do we speak of the US Armed Forces as if they function as some sort of giant civil rights organization?

Exploring the links between political polarization and declining trust in news media

The press should have been asking questions over the past 35 years- no matter who was in office. This is not the case.

Iraq, Sept 11th, GWOT, Afghanistan, a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security that fails to keep opioids/cartel product from showing up all over the US, etc.

In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.

Small Town Paper – Local News

Example one:

August 11, 2023 Whidbey News-Times

Whidbey sewer plants win state awards

“The Oak Harbor Clean Water Facility was recognized as outstanding by the Department of Ecology.”

The Coupeville treatment plant received the outstanding performance award for the 13th consecutive year, and the Holmes Harbor plant was awarded for the 17th year in a row. The Penn Cove wastewater treatment plant was also a recipient this year.”

Would any newsperson ever ask:

When is the last time all of Penn Cove was safe for recreational shellfish harvest?

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

Several years ago I grabbed a camera and went out to make my way around Penn Cove.

I found this sign posted on 4/2/2020 at the west end of Penn Cove. The sign has been there long enough to become faded from the weather.

WDFW has posted this permanent sign showing a dark shaded area in the eastern part of Penn Cove. The dark shaded area indicates a location that is unsafe for clam & oyster harvest.

Interesting that the part of the cove farthest from open waters is the part where the water is cleaner.

$6.3 million “to fund the acquisition of an existing hotel. Marathon Enterprises Inc. is located in Ocean Shores, Grays Harbor County, Washington. The project is expected to result in saving eight jobs and creating one full time job.”

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

The small papers will say they need more support from subscribers and advertising dollars or cash from the federal government to stay alive. All this because COVID or the internet or lack of newspaper sales, or a free and independent press that needs taxpayer support.

People who take no public funds, private donations or advertising dollars are free to ask questions at any time. Why not the press? Call for unpaid volunteers and you’d get better news coverage than what we have now.

I’d be more interested in paying (again) for a local paper subscription if there was more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

No sense in subscribing to newspapers that do not ask public policy-related questions.

JFK speaks about the role of the press in a free society:

Port Angeles CBP

Are newspeople forbidden to ask questions related to Homeland Security funding and performance?

Voting is highly emphasized in American culture. Newspeople asking questions related to public policy takes a lower priority.

After a Port Angeles CBP buildup that took place more than a decade ago, is there any follow up made by the press to inform the public on whatever results have been achieved?

Possibly of interest:

Years ago, I lived in several different small town areas. Places like Kingston, Port Hadlock and north of Penn Cove.

These areas had small, local newspapers and those papers featured active, online comment sections. Paying for a newspaper subscription was OK with me. There were basic rules for commenting, but it did not seem to matter what name people went by. I never cared.

I used to love the comment sections.

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support from subscription and advertising sales.

Got it.

Cultural Honesty

Symbol of a culture that was once strong (Man On The Moon in ’69). A culture that is now weak. Symbol of an American press that will avoid asking questions.

JFK speaks about the role of the press in a free society:

A local Mom and Pop’s restaurant is still using the banned and evil plastic bags that are best suited for their customers to carry home hot menu selections.

Governments at various levels are now in the habit of setting deadlines for new restrictions, bans and mandates.

Smoking bans, plastic bag bans, gun bans, federal toilet regulations, bottled water bans, mandates on what sort of vehicle you may drive.

All this, while we are told that US military operations in distant lands are somehow linked to American rights and freedoms.

If I was Governor

Business people would make business decisions. I would let restaurant people run restaurants. They have an incentive to keep their customers safe and happy. Health Dept. standards would be in place for restaurants. I would not get involved in fast food or take out packaging regulations. Customers would support or walk away from the businesses of their choosing. Telling small business people they can’t use the traditional bags they prefer doesn’t seem to fit with a society that can’t stop bragging about freedom, thanking the troops for freedoms, fighting wars for freedoms, staging military jet flyovers at sporting events for freedom, etc.

Ultra Lightweight Produce Bags

Give the planet a break and reach for these super lightweight, environmentally-friendly produce bags. Use caution when loading sweet potatoes, ears of corn, bananas, etc. Using two, three or four of the lightweight bags creates enough strength to recreate the use of the old bags that were not OK for the global environment.

Also, be sure to allow plenty of time and patience to pick away at the proper end of the bag in order to try and get it open. Using several bags for a few sweet potatoes requires the attempt at opening the bag steps to be repeated multiple times for the same size produce purchase.

Took a look on the web to see if others were sharing on this topic. No such luck. Independent thinking and blog posts appear to have been scrubbed away. The web is now about trying to sell you stuff.

Don’t Be a Litterbug

I think we’ll use the bag shown at the top of this page to clean out our cat litter box. We will not toss it out the window of our car as we blast down the highway. We will not leave it on the beach. We will bag up our trash and have a proper lid on the trash can. We will pick up trash when we see it blowing through the neighborhood.

The federal government is a different animal. Both major parties have taken turns in power as the decades go by. When failures take place, lessons learned, solid news reporting and public information can be hard to come by.

Sorry, no newspeople available to ask:

Mr President,

Going back to the 1990 Operation Desert Shield,

How would American freedoms today be any different if US troops were never sent to Iraq?

Uncle Sam is having a hell of a time finding people to sign up for the US Armed Forces. Pretending that decades of undeclared/unwon wars are linked in any way with American freedoms is the kind of dishonesty that will snuff out the energy American families once had for encouraging young people to enlist.

Good luck with your US Armed Forces recruiting crisis.

As time goes on, American freedoms and the consumer choices we have are becoming more restricted by a combination of government and big business policies, not Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden or the next bad guy DOD will be going after in distant lands.
