It’s a society where elected officials and high level DOD civilians speak of the US Armed Forces as if they function as some sort of giant civil rights organization.
The idea that the US Armed Forces are sent to distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms is repeated many times over
The press plays along by not asking questions.
Sending The Troops to Iraq and Afghanistan placed people into a life and death situation. If elected officials tried to justify this with claims that it was for the purpose of defending American rights and freedoms, why did no newsperson anywhere stick their hand in the air and ask for clarification on this?
Several news sources published this quote. View them here.
The idea that sending hometown troops to Africa would be linked in any way with keeping the people of Salisbury Maryland safe and free calls for more discussion.
Mayor Day,
While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.
Can elected officials of any party or any member of the press help us to understand the militarized version of freedom here?
American freedoms come and go. None of the above are linked in any way with The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Troops, The Dept. of Defense, the outcome of military operations overseas or jet noise over Coupeville.
Look for newspeople and school teachers to ask zero questions in this area:

My understanding is that Seafair goes back to the Cold War era and is brought to you by a giant defense contractor.
They can probably find a large number of veterans who will say that the show brings the Sound of Freedom.
It feels like a society where honest and meaningful ideas stand up to questioning and discussion, but the questioning and discussion rarely takes place.
Would any newsperson ever ask:
Did the advantage of US air power allow the undeclared wars in Iraq or Afghanistan to be prevented, won or shut down?
US jet aircraft have been able to strike targets in what wars won by the US?

Federal credibility is squandered over a period of decades. Now, people are scolded for wanting to be honestly informed on government activities. Well done. Something to get proud about.
Don’t lie to people and maybe they would be more patriotic.
Conspiracy Theory?
Best case scenario- elected officials, public agencies, & a free and independent press work together to keep people informed.
Asking for clarification/better info is not the same as offering up any sort of conspiracy theory.
More information is better- this is how science and medicine works.
Seems like the badass terrorists we are supposed to stay scared of could do their thing in 6 or 8 states at the same time- and they would tie up thousands of law enforcement personnel if they then fled into the woods:

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.
Both major political parties are good with it.
Understandable why young people & their parents & grandparents would take a dim view on all this. Continuing on this path will wear down the energy American families once had for encouraging young people to enlist.
There has been good news for recruiting recently after standards were modified to create a prep course category for training recruits.
Thousands of American families have now had a loved one who did one or more tours in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Will they support new enlistments?
Our take:
The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.
Some will say obese teens and young adults are to blame for the big recruiting crisis.
Thousands of young, intelligent and athletic Americans participate in college athletics each year. Certainly, they would qualify to enlist- no rehab/prep program required.
Why are these people not showing up at the recruiting office?

The President could always ask his supporters what they think. Have a town hall meeting. Send members of congress back home to host their own town hall meetings. Listen to people when they speak up.

No matter what elected officials have decided to do Re: enabling drug use in WA, a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security has been on the job in recent years.
People will say Biden turned his back on border security. Let’s go with that.
“Free nasal naloxone is available at all branch locations while supplies last. Fentanyl test strips are also available at the main downtown branch.”
“The library receives around 500 to 800 naloxone kits each month to distribute, depending on patron interest.”
“Naloxone is used to reverse an opioid overdose, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. Naloxone is safe, works almost immediately, and is not addictive, according to medical professionals.”
“Fentanyl test strips can detect the presence of fentanyl in different kinds of drugs. They provide people who use drugs with information about fentanyl in the illegal drug supply so they can take steps to reduce the risk of overdose.”
Across The Nation
If you are on the Kristi Noem team, you are out kicking ass.
If you are part of a local drug task force, or narcotics enforcement team, you are advertising the latest big drug bust after cartel product is able to move past the jurisdiction of federal agents at borders, border crossings and ports of entry, REAL ID checks and a barrier of DOD ground units, US Navy and US Coast Guard vessels prior to arriving in Hometown, USA.
If you are part of a local health dept. you are handing out Naloxone as always, to deal with the stuff that doesn’t get reported in the big local drug bust.

These troops would have to undergo a criminal background check for security reasons. In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.
These areas had small, local newspapers and those papers featured active, online comment sections. Paying for a newspaper subscription was OK with me. There were basic rules for commenting, but it did not seem to matter what name people went by. I never cared.
Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support in the form of grant money, subscription and advertising sales, etc.
Got it.
Love to see newspeople out asking questions.
What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.
Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

The post 911 era has been a time to tell the American people that US troops are sent to distant lands to defend American freedoms. This urban legend has run its course. People have seen enough now to know this is no more than a marketing strategy. Uniparty newspeople play along by not asking questions:

More Discussion Please
Both major parties tell us The Troops are in distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms.
Uncle Sam is having a hell of a time finding people to sign up for the US Armed Forces. Pretending that decades of undeclared/unwon wars are linked in any way with American freedoms is the kind of dishonesty that will snuff out the energy American families once had for encouraging young people to enlist.
Good luck with your US Armed Forces recruiting crisis.
“Agreed. Make it clear that peaceful protest and protected speech are acceptable (even when the content of the speech is disagreeable).
And to be clear: come down like a ton of bricks on illegal/violent activity, including attempts to intimidate others engaged in similar forms of legal, constitutionally protected expression.
Now as always, when one disagrees with the content of protected expression, the best antidote is more speech. And the antidote to violence and destruction is getting your ass hauled off in handcuffs. These are not contradictory approaches.”
Our Take
Violent protest, threats of violence and property damage are not to be tolerated.
Seems like government should be neutral on questioning/protesting US government or foreign government policies.
If REAL ID is critical to the safety of America, have travelers out at the airport been less safe since 911?

At The Airport
At the airport- REAL ID will solve what sorts of problems? What will improve?
Would any newsperson ever ask:
What keeps terrorists of the GWOT from creating a disruption at the back end of the airport security/ID screening line?
Americans were told they faced a life and death situation after 911. If certain actions were not taken, terrorists could come to America to disrupt our way of life and attempt another 911.
If all this was a life and death situation that required sending the troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, wouldn’t it be important to ask a few public policy questions about what was going on?
Good for another four years?

WWII costume reminds us of a time before decades of undeclared/unwon wars stacked up.
The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.
“After recently blinking in his tariff war against much of the world by suspending his beloved tariffs on 70 countries for 90 days, President Trump has just engaged in a mega-blink against China, the country that he refused to include in his recent massive tariff suspension. Blinking this time against what U.S. officials say is America’s enemy, adversary, competitor, and rival, Trump has just announced that the massive tariffs that he imposed against China will now also be suspended for 90 days as part of a temporary mutual tariff-reducing agreement between the U.S. and China.”
Wife and I went out to a local grocery store to pick up veggies and beer.
Wife is up front with credit card to pay while I unload cart behind her. Cashier (friendly and professional) needs to see both of our IDs to make beer purchase.
Both of us were born in the 1960s. Wife told me/pointed out that the store had put up a bold type sign in advance notifying of this new policy.
Over the past few years:
Some places simply want you to state your DOB. Some want to see ID and some want to scan ID.
This was the first time both adults had to show ID for one adult to pay for beer.
“The Daily Mail reported that Amazon plans to add the cost of tariffs to its price tags, a move that has sparked a strong reaction from the Trump administration.”

A real War On Terror would prompt newspeople to ask:
Guaranteed: No TV newsperson anywhere will ever ask this question. Americans do not live in a free and honest society.
Imagine the TV newsperson, on camera, escorting the TSA official all the way to the back of the “be sure to arrive early line” and asking what keeps the bad guys from creating a disruption at that point.

Airport Security Screening – Zero questions from newspeople:
“What goes on at airports is not security. It is Security Theater. When the government’s own agents try to smuggle “weapons” aboard airliners to test the system, they succeed ninety-five percent of the time.”
“Further, a terrorist doesn’t need to get aboard an airliner to blow up spectacularly. At many airports, hundreds of people line up at ticket counters during peak hours. A carry-on bag of explosive would easily create enough slaughter to shut down air travel and to make international headlines for weeks.”
“Many Americans mistakenly believe government “grants” rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights, and that it grants them to American citizens only.”
“Constitutional scholar Andrew Napolitano dismisses such claims, writing:
We know from the writings of James Madison — who authored the Bill of Rights — that the Founders regarded the freedom of speech as a personal individual natural right. It is also, of course, expressly protected from government interference and reprisal in the First Amendment. The courts have ruled that it protects all persons — no matter their immigration status — who may think as they wish, say what they think, publish what they say, worship or not and associate with whomever they choose.”
“As long as anyone is sitting in shackles in a federal detention center simply for writing an op-ed, freedom of speech is not safe for anyone in the United States.”
The Bill of Rights places limits on government, it does not grant rights.
US citizen – yes or no?
Imagine a Japanese family. They are not US citizens. They come to the US each summer to visit family, go to Disneyland, see the Grand Canyon, etc.
They are pulled over for a minor traffic violation. They cooperate with the officer on the scene. Do they have less rights in dealing with LE authorities than someone who was born in the US?
Some agree with government policies. Some disagree. Some speak out. Some engage in protest.
Seems like government should be neutral on political speech.
Non-violent/peaceful speech that does not involve property damage.
Sort of like: What church do you want to attend?

“…assuming that anyone who advocates a position is culpable for any crimes committed by any other advocate with the same view.”
“This was the tacit doctrine that the Biden administration used to legally scourge peaceful January 6 protestors who merely “paraded without a permit” through or near the US Capitol that day. Because a minority of January 6 protestors became violent, the FBI presumed that “trespassing plus thought crimes equal terrorism,” justifying harsh sentences for anyone at the scene (except for the undercover federal agents and informants).”
