To me, the most interesting people in politics are the people who are willing to question their chosen political party.

She didn’t mention decades of undeclared/unwon wars in distant lands.

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars.

This appears to be the case no matter what political party or personality is elected to office.

Here at Oak Bay Starfish, we are OK with questioning both major parties.

Both major parties are good with telling us The Troops are sent to distant lands to defend American rights and freedoms.

As time goes on, the consumer choices we have are becoming more restricted by a combination of government and big business policies, not Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden or the next bad guy DOD will be going after in distant lands.

Governments at various levels are now in the habit of setting deadlines for new restrictions, bans and mandates.

Smoking bans, plastic bag bans, gun bans, federal toilet regulations, bottled water bans, mandates on what sort of vehicle you may drive.

All this, while we are told that US military operations in distant lands are somehow linked to American rights and freedoms.

Both major parties are OK with federal prohibition of alcohol and tobacco for adults age 18-20.

No such thing the day I graduated from high school.

That was before decades of military operations for your freedoms.

Both major political parties are now OK with treating 18-20 year old adults as second-class citizens.

How the Federal Government Acquired the Power of Assassination

by Jacob G. Hornberger

Oct 29, 2025

“…they demanded a Bill of Rights, which actually should have been called a Bill of Prohibitions because it doesn’t grant rights at all. Instead, it expressly prohibited the federal government from infringing or destroying rights.”

“The Fifth Amendment prohibited the federal government from depriving any person of life without due process of law. Stretching all the way back to the Magna Carta in 1215, the term due process had come to mean, at a minimum, the dual requirement of formal notice and the right to be heard before being assassinated or executed.”

“Notice something important about the Fifth Amendment: Its protection applies to “persons,” not just American citizens. Our American ancestors ensured that the president would be precluded from killing anyone without due process of law — that is, without formal notice (e.g., an indictment) and the right to be heard (e.g., a hearing or trial).”

From 2004

“Today, however, the Congress has relinquished its delegated powers, giving the President license to do whatever he and his office determine that they can get away with. Consequentially, the presidential and legislative oaths to the Constitution have just turned into a great photo op on inauguration day.”

Much of this article is simply incorrect or highly exaggerated….and I say this as someone who just published a paper on western Washington wildfires (and have published 5 others on western US wildfires). I know the literature.”

“Western Washington wildfires are NOT increasing in size or frequency. All major western WA and Oregon fires are associated with strong easterly (from the east) winds, which will DECREASE under global warming.”

“We are now in a wildfire DROUGHT compared to 1920 and earlier. Global warming is not a significant driver of wildfires in our region, but poor forecast practices, a huge increase of human ignitions, increasing flammable grasses, and huge increases in human population in vulnerable areas are all important.”

“Why can’t the Seattle Times publish a fact-based story on this topic rather than this Trump and global warming is the cause yellow journalism?”

Small Town USA – Big On Patriotism

“For the past couple of years, the Whidbey News-Times paid the insurance for the Veterans Day Parade, about $200, because it was a small way of saying thank you to the men and women who sacrificed so that we may have our liberties, including our Freedom of Speech.”

Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?

Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?

More here:

Military Town – Hometown Pride

The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.

Look for newspeople and school teachers to ask zero questions in this area:

How Do The Troops Defend The Constitution?

Not asking about the oath of enlistment. Asking about what happens after the oath has been taken.

Love to see newspeople interview elected officials and let us know how sending US Troops to Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, etc., is somehow defending the constitution.

Trump pressures broadcasters over critical coverage, escalating attack on speech

“President Donald Trump said Thursday that regulators should consider revoking the licenses of broadcasters who air negative coverage or commentary of him…”

“Carr told CNBC that holding a broadcast license is a privilege. “It comes with an obligation to serve the public interest,” he said.”

Unlike many local newspapers, alternative media is still good about asking questions and maintaining open and active comment sections. Several comments are posted with the video below.

In a free and honest society, newspeople would ask questions.

War on Terror, Drug War, US troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.

In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.

Alternative media is OK with asking questions.

I enjoyed the article below, especially the parts that refer to newspeople not asking questions.

Charlie Kirk: What Really Happened?
By Donald Jeffries
“I Protest”
September 18, 2025

“Unlike any member of our “free press,” I’ve actually attempted to look into the logistics of the shooting. You know, the evidence. That’s what they should be doing, of course, but we know they aren’t allowed to investigate anything of substance, and someone has to do it.”

“The arrest of Tyler Robinson, a twenty two year old apparent incel, was breathlessly announced by our state controlled media.”

“As always, because these events are never properly investigated, internet sleuths, and Thought Criminals like me, will ask uncomfortable questions.”

“It’s bad enough that we have to work around a state controlled press that won’t ask any pertinent questions, and law enforcement that can’t or won’t actually investigate honestly, we now have to deal with the AI craziness, where a picture or even a video that looks entirely realistic can be created to portray whatever you desire.”

“…I say if you don’t want speculation- responsible or reckless- then come up with better narratives. Your stories are absolutely ridiculous. We have been lied to about everything. We have no good reason to believe anything you say.”

Just Be Honest

This could be a slogan for government to live by, no matter what political party or personality is in power.

The US federal government has been involved in decades of various events where records were sealed or redacted and files were kept secret.

As the years went by, the public found out they were lied to.

Federal credibility is squandered over a period of decades. Now, people are scolded for wanting to be honestly informed on government activities. Well done. Something to get proud about.

Don’t lie to people and maybe they would be more patriotic.

Conspiracy Theory?

Best case scenario- elected officials, public agencies, & a free and independent press work together to keep people informed.

Asking for clarification/better info is not the same as offering up any sort of conspiracy theory.

More information is better- this is how science and medicine works.

Over the years, some people have been freed from prison based on new DNA evidence becoming available.

Are the people who took steps to discover that new evidence conspiracy theorists?

Apply this same curiosity and desire for knowledge to some controversial topics and you’ll be labeled a conspiracy theorist.

Why the effort to suppress questions?

Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said was the subject of a major War on Terror bust earlier this year.

Any questions from newspeople?

He did time in the National Guard and had moved on with that part of his life by age 19. How did he manage to do that?

Where did he go to high school?

Where was he living and working in recent years?

What National Guard unit was he in?

Did he have any previous criminal record?

Did he complete any overseas deployments?

What was his job training?

Zero questions from newspeople?

Seems like someone involved in a major crime like a mass casualty shooting, etc. will have some details of their life reported on by the press.

Elimination Of Local News Reader Comments

Elimination of reader comments works against the idea of paying for an online subscription.

Years ago, I lived in several different small town areas. Places like Kingston, Port Hadlock and north of Penn Cove.

These areas had small, local newspapers and those papers featured active, online comment sections. Paying for a newspaper subscription was OK with me. There were basic rules for commenting, but it did not seem to matter what name people went by. I never cared.

I used to love the comment sections.

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support in the form of grant money, subscription and advertising sales, etc.

Got it.

People who take no public funds, private donations or advertising dollars are free to ask questions at any time. Why not the press? Call for unpaid volunteers and you’d get better news coverage than what we have now.

Operating A Camera In A Public Place

Love to see newspeople out asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

JFK speaks about the role of the press and voices of dissent in a free society:

The era of newspeople not asking questions brings on private citizens who go out and ask questions.

Instead of waiting for school teachers to teach about individual rights and limited government authority, waiting on the press to ask questions, or courts to handle cases, these guys go out and update us with a quick reality check.

These guys were also never waiting on the overthrow of Saddam Hussein or the take down of any other bad guy in distant lands, as DOD defends the constitution, etc.

Firefighters question leaders’ role in Bear Gulch Fire immigration raid

Wildfire veterans believe top officials on the fire sent their crews into an ambush

By Alex Brown Washington State Standard – Sept 2, 2025

“After about five minutes discussing the time card issue, according to the firefighter who was present at the raid, federal agents spent the next three hours checking each firefighter’s immigration status.”

Did whatever government or private organizations involved in hiring for this job check and verify immigration documents prior to putting people to work? Did these public or private organizations send people into the field with some way to verify their status?

Trump has been up front on his priorities in this area.

We are guessing the federal government would approve of the image above and maybe the image below. We have not made application for approval.

I grew up in the Cold War era. Pledge of allegiance in elementary school. Man on the Moon in ’69.

The WWII generation set up a modern society that seemed to be working pretty well during the last century. Still room for improvement, but mostly, things seemed to be up and running. Flag images above are symbols of the best of American culture during that time.

Sorry, no newspeople available to ask:

Mr President,

Going back to the 1990 Operation Desert Shield,

How would American freedoms today be any different if US troops were never sent to Iraq?

The tattered flag that still flies is a symbol of The Troops risking their ass in Iraq and Afghanistan and what awaits when they return home.

In past decades, people could do time in uniform, then return to the US with a feeling they were living in the best country on the planet.

Standards have deteriorated. Today, the troops return to an ongoing breakdown of society.

Will Northwest HIDTA be shut down when cartel drugs stop entering the US? Have recent US Dept. of Homeland Security efforts reduced the need for Northwest HIDTA services?
