Why the Mainstream Media Is in Trouble
by Jacob G. Hornberger
January 31, 2025

“The Internet, obviously, has been the mainstream media’s worst enemy. That’s because people were now able to discover websites, podcasts, videos, and other such things that were willing to tell them the truth about their villainy of their own government. The mainstream media has been having trouble ever since.”

Glenn Greenwald:

Glorification of military service / total nonsense:

Our right to vote has always been protected by the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces.”

Page 7 of the Washington State Elections Voters Pamphlet for the November 5th, 2019 General Election:

Our right to vote is protected by the members of the U.S. Armed Forces.”

If a right to vote has always been protected by the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, how come women were not allowed full voting rights at the end of WWI?

Why the need for a 1965 Voting Rights Act if overseas military operations somehow secured voting rights?

If a right to vote is protected by the US Armed Forces, what becomes of that right when the US leaves Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc., without a victory?

Look for the mainstream press to ask zero questions in this area.

Mainstream media functions like paid actors reading a script.

Americans do not live in a free and honest society. Today, the mainstream media will function like paid actors reading a script:

Would any newsperson ever ask:

Did the advantage of US air power allow the undeclared wars in Iraq or Afghanistan to be prevented, won or shut down?

US jet aircraft have been able to strike targets in what wars won by the US?

Currently serving four-star officers and high level DOD civilians have been associated with what wars won by the US?

Has dressing women to look like men had any positive or negative impact on recruiting?

Will Trump Really Release the Long-Secret JFK Assassination-Related Records?
by Jacob G. Hornberger
January 24, 2025

Conspiracy Theory?

Maybe there would be less in the way of conspiracy theories if people felt like they were properly informed.

Where is the press in all this?

Love to see more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post the statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Regular newspeople don’t seem to have permission to ask hard questions.

Sports is different.

After each game, the press has access to coaches and players. All sorts of information is available all of the time.

Sports writers are OK with being critical of coaches, teams, players, the rule book, the league, referees, team owners, when the season starts and ends, etc.

In government, it is fully understood that people will not have access to complete information through everyday channels.

Ever hear of a Freedom of Information Act Request in sports? How about a denied FOIA request?

Ever see a pro football coach or quarterback refer reporters to his press secretary for answers? Presidents do so on a daily basis. Professionals are hired to provide only the desired version of answers to questions.

Ever see a pro football coach or quarterback refer reporters to a public information officer for answers to questions?

The open attitude about sports reporting does not cross over to stories about the US Dept. of Homeland Security, big drug busts, The Troops, the War on Terror or local water quality impacted by sewage treatment plant outfalls.

More here: Newspeople Ask Questions If It’s A Sports Story

Are people who work for newspapers and TV news folks given permission to go out and to do interviews related to public policy? If elected officials and people who run government agencies are not available to be interviewed, that should become the story.

Mainstream media functions like paid actors reading a script.

Misinformation?

@PressSec says on social media that “the major platforms have a responsibility… to stop amplifying untrustworthy content, disinformation and misinformation, especially related to covid-19, vaccinations, and elections.”

Today, crisis requires a one size fits all, guilty until proven innocent approach.

Newspeople show a lack of initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

Today, it seems as if the press promotes whatever message is handed down by elected officials and government agencies.

Americans were never meant to agree on matters of a personal nature. This is why we have so many different churches here and people who opt out on attending services.

We were told we needed to send troops to Vietnam, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Some may have become skeptical along the way.

Alternative media is good about asking questions:

When major media platforms promote the idea that sending hometown troops to Africa is linked with keeping the people of Salisbury Maryland safe and free, is there any discussion Re: disinformation and misinformation?

Mayor Day,

While the troops were deployed, federal law was signed prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to adults age 18-20.

“For the past couple of years, the Whidbey News-Times paid the insurance for the Veterans Day Parade, about $200, because it was a small way of saying thank you to the men and women who sacrificed so that we may have our liberties, including our Freedom of Speech.”

Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?

Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?

Asking for clarification/better info is not the same as offering up any sort of conspiracy theory.

More information is better-this is how science and medicine works. Over the years, some people have been freed from prison based on new DNA evidence becoming available.

Are the people who took steps to discover that new evidence conspiracy theorists?

Apply this same curiosity and desire for knowledge to some controversial topics and you’ll be labeled a conspiracy theorist.

Why the effort to suppress questions?

Best case scenario-elected officials, public agencies, & a free and independent press work together to keep people informed.

Twitter used to be a place to take a look at what people were posting for comments on local newspaper articles.

I noticed comments on a local newspaper site here are pretty much dead:

Everett Herald on X

This is not the only newspaper. Things used to be different.

Why did this happen?

Kitsap Sun: no longer posting.

Sequim Gazette: comments are mostly inactive.

Peninsula Daily News: comments are mostly inactive.

Restricting And Suppressing Local News Comment Sections

Years ago, I lived in several different small town areas. Places like Kingston, Port Hadlock and north of Penn Cove.

These areas had small, local newspapers and those papers featured active, online comment sections. Paying for a newspaper subscription was OK with me. There were basic rules for commenting, but it did not seem to matter what name people went by. I never cared.

I used to love the comment sections.

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

I’d be more interested in paying (again) for a local paper subscription if there was more in the way of investigative reporting & newspeople asking questions. Elimination of reader comments works against the idea of paying for an online subscription.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support from subscription and advertising sales.

Got it.

After local newspapers shut down comments, people could still go to Twitter and take a look at what people were posting for comments. Some papers have since shut down posting of their news articles on what is now called X.

Some papers still post to X, but commenting is mostly inactive.

YouTube can be a very good place to view active comment sections, but it may be tricky to find a video that relates to a news story/public policy update you are looking for.

PBS News Video – Experts Deliver Their Report

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars. Understandable why young people & their parents & grandparents would take a dim view on all this.

The Armed Forces recruiting crisis was earned by the politicians, generals, and high ranking civilians who have been running the Pentagon over the past 30 years or so. The crisis is also upon us due to newspeople not asking questions going back to the time the Cold War ended.

Flag officers and high level DOD civilians built careers made of undeclared/unwon wars. Now they must mastermind ways to recruit a new generation.

They are going to tell us how all this works.

When news/social media posts are created by federal employees, there’s no need to deal with any awkward/real questions from the press.

During the Vietnam War, US troops were sent to Vietnam.

Today, the Ohio National Guard is sent to “support Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.”

The US press has a long history of not asking questions Re: undeclared/unwon DOD wars and military operations for your freedoms.

Americans were told they faced a life and death situation after 911. If certain actions were not taken, terrorists could come to America to disrupt our way of life and attempt another 911.

If all this was a life and death situation that required sending the troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, wouldn’t it be important to ask a few public policy questions about what was going on?

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

The small papers will say they need more support from subscribers and advertising dollars or cash from the federal government to stay alive. All this because COVID or the internet or lack of newspaper sales, or a free and independent press that needs taxpayer support.

Feds take over investigation after $7 million in drugs found

Federal authorities have taken over the investigation into the early April discovery of 400 pounds of methamphetamine and cocaine worth $7 million on a Joyce-area beach after no local-area connection with the drugs was established, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.”

News links and Sheriff’s Dept. Facebook post here:

Port Angeles Border Patrol Agents Seize Meth?

December 7, 2022 United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington

Two defendants appear on indictment connected to $7 million in drugs left on beach near Port Angeles, Washington in April 2021

More than 400 pounds of methamphetamine and two pounds of fentanyl powder show up on a beach near Port Angeles. Local CBP fails to keep product from entering Clallam County. How did this meth and fentanyl enter the US?

Zero questions from newspeople.

“On April 7, 2021, beachcombers near Port Angeles reported a black duffel bag with drugs inside. The Clallam County Sheriff’s office took possession of the bag found to contain 2 pounds of fentanyl powder and nearly 60 pounds of methamphetamine. The fentanyl powder was originally believed to be cocaine. Just days later, on April 11, 2021, a different beach walker reported another find – seven more duffel bags containing 342 pounds of methamphetamine. The Sheriff’s Office estimated the street value of the drugs as nearly $7 million.”

Conclusion

When news/social media posts are created by federal employees, there’s no need to deal with any awkward/real questions from the press. Love to see a free and independent press step up to ask questions as time goes by.

Multiple news reports remain on the web describing how this event unfolded back in 2021. The incident is back in the news now, because there has been a recent conviction in this case.

Here is the news release from Port Angeles CBP, dated April 15, 2021:

Border Patrol Agents seize methamphetamine near Port Angeles

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection, United States Border Patrol agents assigned to the Port Angeles Station seized a significant amount of methamphetamine west of the city of Port Angeles during a joint-interagency effort.”

Meth
Border Patrol agents seized more than 340 pounds
of methamphetamine near Port Angeles, Wash.,
April 11.

“On April 11, after receiving information that suspicious bags were observed near the beach, a Border Patrol agent arrived and deployed his K-9 partner. The Border Patrol K-9 led the agent to multiple bags and alerted to the presence of narcotics. The bags contained 342 pounds of methamphetamine worth nearly $1.7 million.”

Question for CBP:

Why does the news story created by CBP not line up with local reports?

Sheriff’s Dept. Facebook post here.

Mainstream newspeople play along by not asking questions.

If you run a government operation-these are the reporters you want to see on interview day:

State-Run Media:

April 15, 2021 U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Border Patrol Agents seize methamphetamine near Port Angeles

WTF?

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection, United States Border Patrol agents assigned to the Port Angeles Station seized a significant amount of methamphetamine west of the city of Port Angeles during a joint-interagency effort.”

“On April 11, after receiving information that suspicious bags were observed near the beach, a Border Patrol agent arrived and deployed his K-9 partner.”

If, on April 7th: “On April 7, a caller told the sheriff’s office about a bag containing “white crystal substances he believed [were] probably drugs’‘ on a beach west of Port Angeles.”

Why did Port Angeles USBP not seize the meth using a K-9 until April 11th?

“The Border Patrol K-9 led the agent to multiple bags and alerted to the presence of narcotics.”

Wait- local people found the drugs and told local LE. Your “K-9 partner” played zero role in discovering the stash.

Agents seized the contraband and further coordinated with all partner entities to include the U.S. Coast Guard, Homeland Security Investigations, the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, CBP’s Air and Marine Operations, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.”

If Port Angeles US Border Patrol agents used a K-9  to seize a significant amount of methamphetamine on April 11, why did federal agents not take over the investigation until May 3rd, three weeks later?

Newspeople Not Asking Questions

The press stopped asking questions a while back. People go to social media to share ideas. People are OK with basic rules such as:

No hate speech, insults, threats, foul language, attacking other commenters, etc. These are rules that make sense.

Today, social media posts are suppressed, filtered, censored and shadow banned. Will social media die out? What will become of the press?

Private citizens are stepping in and going out with a camera to see and document what is going on.

Instead of waiting for school teachers to teach about individual rights and limited government authority, waiting on the press to ask questions, or courts to handle cases, these guys go out and update us with a quick reality check.

Also not waiting on the overthrow of Saddam Hussein or the take down of the next bad guy in distant lands, as DOD defends the constitution, etc.

Videos recorded at or outside of sites that are funded by the public seem to be best for documenting these issues.

Any TV newsperson could go out and educate the public on their rights/public official’s obligation to provide info, etc. That does not happen.

Mainstream Press

In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.

Small Town Papers – Two Examples

In the news- example number one:

August 11, 2023 Whidbey News-Times

Whidbey sewer plants win state awards

“The Oak Harbor Clean Water Facility was recognized as outstanding by the Department of Ecology.”

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

In the news- example number two:

$6.3 million in federal cash for a used Ocean Shores hotel.

Any questions from newspeople?

December 8, 2022 The Daily World

Dept. of Ag invests $6.3M to purchase Ocean Shores hotel

$6.3 million “to fund the acquisition of an existing hotel. Marathon Enterprises Inc. is located in Ocean Shores, Grays Harbor County, Washington. The project is expected to result in saving eight jobs and creating one full time job.”

Sorry, no newspeople available to ask:

Mr President,

Going back to the 1990 Operation Desert Shield,

How would American freedoms today be any different if US troops were never sent to Iraq?

Uncle Sam is having a hell of a time finding people to sign up for the US Armed Forces. Pretending that decades of undeclared/unwon wars are linked in any way with American freedoms is the kind of dishonesty that will snuff out the energy American families once had for encouraging young people to enlist.

Good luck with your US Armed Forces recruiting crisis.

As time goes on, American freedoms and the consumer choices we have are becoming more restricted by a combination of government and big business policies, not Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden or the next bad guy DOD will be going after in distant lands.

If The Troops defend American rights and freedoms, what becomes of those freedoms when the US leaves Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc., without a victory?

I am from the last century.

The USA is a society where honest and meaningful ideas stand up to questioning and discussion, but the questioning and discussion rarely takes place.

Concerns here are not specific to any political party, personality or group identity.

Whatever seemed to work in the modern society of the last century was ditched to experiment with new ways of doing things some years ago. Incentives to maintain the modern society were removed.

Enlisting

During the last century, there was a tradition among American families where one generation after another would do time in uniform. I went into the Marines in 1979. No controversy. No war. No thanks for your service (a good thing). The US Armed Forces were on the back burner, right where they are meant to be. Some signed up out of high school, some did not. Both choices were good. The parental generation would support doing an enlistment.

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars. Understandable why young people & their parents & grandparents would take a dim view on all this.

The DOD brand has been wrecked.

2024

Thousands of US families have now had a loved one who did one or more tours in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Will they encourage new enlistments?

The Oak Bay Starfish Take

The US Dept. of Defense was established after WWII, in the late 1940s. DOD has a truly poor track record with undeclared wars.

If DOD was an NFL team, sports talk radio would feature comments like:

The Dept. of Defense was nowhere to be found on 911. We haven’t won a war since.

Currently serving four-star officers and high level DOD civilians have been associated with what wars won by the US?

Both major US political parties may be forced to downsize their ambitions for various overseas military operations when American families no longer send the young ones to enlist and will not support a draft.

Four-star officers and high level DOD civilians built careers made of undeclared/unwon wars. Now they must mastermind ways to recruit a new generation.

Long-term closure? No chance for a quick cleanup, ongoing State Patrol enforcement, maintenance & volunteer groups to keep rest stops cleaned up and ready to go?

49 other states operate highway rest stops. If I was Governor, I would insist on picking the top 3 states that are best at running rest stops and running WA rest stops in a similar manner until further improvements could be made.

These are federal highways. Publicly funded highway safety facilities will be shut down because of misbehavior? WTF?

“…some visitors have not been using the facilities for their intended purpose…”

Living at rest stops, illegal dumping, littering, vandalism and verbal threats against employees will keep gasoline tanker truck and HAZMAT transport operators from stopping to take a break for safety?

One of the suspects got into a scuffle with the guy with the firearm and the weapon discharged, striking the suspect in the lower extremity.”

No sense in subscribing to newspapers that do not ask public policy-related questions.

Foot ferry envisioned from Ocean Shores to Westport

Legislature pondering bill that would grant $50M for fast foot ferries throughout Washington waters

The Daily World – Feb 26, 2025

“A ferry from Ocean Shores to Westport and back was part of the discussion of a bill introduced by state Rep. Greg Nance, D-Bainbridge Island. Nance mentioned Grays Harbor and said the ferry ride between Westport and Ocean Shores could serve tourists and locals alike.”

Any Interview With Representative Nance?

Any telephone interview? Any web based interviews? This is routine stuff in 2025.

Looks like the local press was unable to interview Representative Nance before this story was posted.

Questions that may have come up in the interview are in bold type below:

Representative Nance,

In 2008, the El Matador ferry was shut down:

“…too much sand and silt at the entrance and inside the Ocean Shores Marina, and no governmental entity is prepared to apply for dredging permits.”

Are you aware that the situation has now become worse?

The public parking areas adjacent to Damon Point are now closed. Beach walkers have no access to Damon Point.

City of Ocean Shores:

Damon Point Area Access Closed to the Public – Beginning January 27, 2025
Beginning Monday at 7:00am, public access to Damon Point will be strictly prohibited. We will begin stockpiling cobble in the parking lot to the left of the easement. To ensure everyone’s safety access to the area will be closed. This is a critical operation, and we appreciate your full cooperation.”

This public parking area is adjacent to where the El Matador ferry landed on the Ocean Shores side back in 2008.

Representative Nance,

What port facility on the Ocean Shores side would be suitable for the new ferry landing? When is the last time you toured this area? When is the last time you met with Ocean Shores political leaders?

Representative Nance,

Have you been over to Westport to look at a community that faces the same concerns Re: tsunami zone, global warming, sea level rise, climate crisis, king tides, coastal erosion, El Niño/La Niña, winter storms and did not let any of that get in the way of keeping things maintained on their working waterfront?

Representative Nance,

When and why was a decision made to turn away from maintaining the 1916 jetty adjacent to public parking areas at Damon Point?

Representative Nance,

Were you aware that $6.3 million in federal cash went for a used Ocean Shores hotel in late 2022?

Were Washington State lawmakers consulted prior to this deal going through?

December 8, 2022 The Daily World

Dept. of Ag invests $6.3M to purchase Ocean Shores hotel

$6.3 million “to fund the acquisition of an existing hotel. Marathon Enterprises Inc. is located in Ocean Shores, Grays Harbor County, Washington. The project is expected to result in saving eight jobs and creating one full time job.”

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

More Here – Port Angeles CBP:

Unlike many cities of its size, Port Angeles maintains a significant Homeland Security/CBP/Border Patrol presence.

Are newspeople forbidden to ask questions related to Port Angeles Homeland Security funding and performance?

Newspeople have a long history of not asking questions in this area.

New Port Angeles USBP Station opened more than a decade ago. Has the new station been able to prevent cartel drugs from entering the Olympic Peninsula?

Newspeople remain silent.

After a Port Angeles CBP buildup that took place more than a decade ago, is there any follow up made by the press to inform the public on whatever results have been achieved?

If you run a government operation-these are the reporters you want to see on interview day:

2024:

With a significant Homeland Security/CBP/Border Patrol presence at Port Angeles:

Clallam County has one of the highest per capita rates of drug overdoses in the state…”

Look for newspeople to ask zero questions in this area:

When is the last time the Port Angeles Border Patrol made an arrest of any kind?

When is the last time the Port Angeles Border Patrol made an arrest linked in any way to the US/Canada border?

Has massing US Border Patrol agents at the southern edge of the Strait of Juan de Fuca played any role in reducing Clallam County drug overdose numbers?

Have opioid lawsuits played any role in improving the situation?

How do cartels react to opioid lawsuits?

Are passports/enhanced/REAL IDs effective in keeping cartel drugs out of the US?

Standard driver’s licenses have not been accepted at the border since 2009.

When is the last time the Port Angeles Border Patrol made any seizure that kept any amount of fentanyl, heroin or any opioid from entering Clallam County?

Were Clallam County drug overdose death numbers higher before the US Dept. of Homeland Security was established (2002) or are the numbers higher with a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security in place? This giant federal agency now has more than two decades of experience and lessons learned in working to prevent cartel product from entering the US. More overdose deaths now, or before DHS?

Urban legend: The US Border Patrol stopped the Millennium Bomber at Port Angeles-

Ahmed Ressam was captured at the traditional port of entry at Port Angeles by Customs Inspectors wearing blue uniforms- not by Border Patrol Agents wearing green uniforms.

Dec 17, 2029 Peninsula Daily News

Terrorist plot stopped in Port Angeles 20 years ago

“Two decades have passed since U.S. Customs inspectors in Port Angeles foiled a terrorist’s plot to kill and injure as many Americans as possible by blowing up a passenger terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.”

“…he debarked from the MV Coho ferry driving a rental car filled with highly-volatile explosives.”

How many US Border Patrol agents were stationed at Port Angeles in 1999?

Pre-911 staffing levels got the job done.

Love to see newspeople out asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support from subscription and advertising sales.

Got it.

Private citizens asking questions:

Today, the mainstream media will function like paid actors reading a script:

Would any newsperson ever ask:

Nick Shirley did a good job here, making the rounds and gathering content on what people wanted to say. There were people who shied away from questions here. In my view: If you are out to attract attention to a message or your cause- mission accomplished when someone takes notice and asks about it in a neutral way. This is your moment to deliver a free advertisement for yourself and your message.

This blog is not about any specific news event or development in distant lands. This blog is about the general trend of newspeople not asking questions over the past 30 years or so.

Love to see the US mainstream press show some initiative and curiosity in asking questions.

The US could use more questions coming from small and large newspapers, and from TV newspeople.

Some suggestions on where to start:

Today – Mainstream US media functions like paid actors reading a script.

Americans do not live in a free and honest society when the mainstream media functions like paid actors reading a script:

Would any newsperson ever ask:

Did the advantage of US air power allow the undeclared wars in Iraq or Afghanistan to be prevented, won or shut down?

US jet aircraft have been able to strike targets in what wars won by the US?

Currently serving four-star officers and high level DOD civilians have been associated with what wars won by the US?

Has dressing women to look like men had any positive or negative impact on recruiting?

In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.

Small Town Papers – Two Examples

In the news- example number one:

August 11, 2023 Whidbey News-Times

Whidbey sewer plants win state awards

“The Oak Harbor Clean Water Facility was recognized as outstanding by the Department of Ecology.”

The Coupeville treatment plant received the outstanding performance award for the 13th consecutive year, and the Holmes Harbor plant was awarded for the 17th year in a row. The Penn Cove wastewater treatment plant was also a recipient this year.”

Beach adjacent to Award Winning Sewage Treatment Plant:

Coupeville

“Clams, mussels and oysters CLOSED year-round.”

“This beach is within the closure area for a sewage treatment plant outfall and is unsafe for recreational shellfish harvesting.”

Source: WDFW

Would any newsperson ever ask:

When is the last time all of Penn Cove was safe for recreational shellfish harvest?

Zero questions from small or large newspapers. Zero questions from TV newspeople.

In the news- example number two:

$6.3 million in federal cash for a used Ocean Shores hotel.

Any questions from newspeople?

December 8, 2022 The Daily World

The small papers will say they need more support from subscribers and advertising dollars or cash from the federal government to stay alive. All this because COVID or the internet or lack of newspaper sales, or a free and independent press that needs taxpayer support.

People who take no public funds, private donations or advertising dollars are free to ask questions at any time. Why not the press? Call for unpaid volunteers and you’d get better news coverage than what we have now.

I’d be more interested in paying (again) for a local paper subscription if there was more in the way of newspeople asking questions.

Fast boats put agents in close distance with ‘bad guys’ on the watery border

“Marine Interdiction Agent Adam Connerton zigzagged the 1,200-horsepower Border Patrol Interceptor behind the boat he and his crew were chasing.”

“The Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents, stationed in Port Angeles, took a Peninsula Daily News reporter and photographer on a two-hour patrol ride-along last week along the 70 nautical miles of U.S.-Canadian border they patrol.”

“The station’s main focus is seeking out terrorists and terroristic weapons, weapons of mass destruction, drug and merchandise smuggling and boaters’ immigration status, Connerton said.”

“Connerton said he’s aware of the antipathy of some in Clallam and Jefferson counties toward stepped-up Customs and Border Protection activities in recent years, including an ongoing project to build a $5.7 million, 50-agent-capacity Border Patrol station in Port Angeles.”

“His division, located at the Port of Port Angeles’ industrial park near William R. Fairchild International Airport, has patrolled the North Olympic Peninsula for less than three years, beginning with him, another supervisor and three new agents, while the Border Patrol staff increased more than sixfold from 2006 to 2010.”

Information Suppression:

“Customs and Border Protection has refused to release arrest statistics for the North Olympic Peninsula that might be a factor in justifying the increase.”

New border patrol agent in charge at Port Angeles

“Cumbow oversees a force that has grown from four Border Patrol agents in 2006 to 42 under the Department of Homeland Security. In April they are scheduled to move from the federal building in downtown Port Angeles to a headquarters remodeled at cost of nearly $6 million.”

“The agents are responsible for Clallam and Jefferson counties. Additional agents with the Office of Air and Marine operate out of Port of Port Angeles and other agents from the Office of Field Operations monitor the U.S. port of entry at the Port Angeles ferry dock. All three agencies operate under the administrative umbrella of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

Border Patrol cuts ribbon for new $11.9 million facility in Port Angeles

“The Border Patrol celebrated the grand opening of its fenced, sprawling headquarters, an expanded facility for its 42 agents, to the plaintive strains of a bagpipe and an appreciative reaction from a crowd of invitation-only guests.”

“The federal government paid the Eagles Aerie $2.1 million for the land and spent $9.8 million renovating the building.”

“The agency’s agents, who cover Clallam and Jefferson counties and whose territory ranges down to the Columbia River in Oregon, began moving into the 19,000-square-foot facility July 27.”

“The facility also has new offices for the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team.”

“The 42 agents working out of the new facility represent a more than tenfold increase from the four that worked out of the Anderson Building in 2006, according to information from George Behan, a spokesman for 6th District U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, whose constituency includes Clallam and Jefferson counties.”

“The staffing numbers were confirmed Friday by Bates, Behan said.”

Information Suppression Request:

Federal Government asks newspeople to restrict the questions they ask:

“Jones asked a Peninsula Daily News reporter to interview only Border Patrol personnel selected by the agency and to confine interviews of selected personnel to topics concerning the station’s opening.”

“A Border Patrol agent who was asked about the proceedings referred questions to the agency’s public affairs office.”
