dsc_0006-2 Snohomish- No word on how “large quantities of heroin and methamphetamine from Sinaloa, Mexico” made it past federal agents massed at border crossings & ports of entry while looking for passports/enhanced & Real IDs.

Standard driver’s licenses have not been accepted at the border since 2009.

Welcome Home Troops

Thanks for your service

Local law enforcement agencies may benefit when the US Dept. of Homeland Security fails to keep heroin out of the US:

What part of the story is missing?

Has anyone ever seen the press question the US Dept. of Homeland Security/CBP on their role in keeping heroin away from the Puget Sound area?

News tip/story idea: Maybe the local paper could go & interview the owner of the van in the photo above, the owner of the lot where the van is parked, local business people, local law enforcement agencies, the South Whidbey Homeless Coalition, local churches & charities, civic groups, etc. Make a real news story of it.

DSC_0001 “For the past couple of years, the Whidbey News-Times paid the insurance for the Veterans Day Parade, about $200, because it was a small way of saying thank you to the men and women who sacrificed so that we may have our liberties, including our Freedom of Speech.

Many veterans claim to have served to protect American rights & freedoms.

How does this work?

Do the US Armed Forces function as some sort of giant civil rights organization?

Black people were still riding at the back of the bus after the big WWII victory.

Women were not allowed full voting rights at the end of WWI.

Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?

Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

Is protecting freedom of speech even part of training scenarios?

Maybe people are quietly loosing interest in Veterans Day parades because they realize The Troops are not being honored in honest ways.

Photo- Oak Harbor scene

DSC_0001 There is an ongoing effort to attract visitors to historic downtown Oak Harbor.

Many comments and suggestions here: Downtown Oak Harbor dilemma: Attracting shoppers proving to be a challenge (Sorry- all old comments stripped away when local paper launched new commenting format.)

A few thoughts on this:

Entering Oak Harbor from the south- visitors are greeted by a trailer park on the left that looks to be having a bad day- every day. Nothing against trailer parks. In Coupeville- as you enter town from the ferry- on S. Engle Road- there is a trailer park on the right. It always looks well kept.

Maybe Oak Harbor business leaders could work with the landlord at this trailer park and assist in cleanup or in placing some landscaping between the property & the road.

After gathering an initial impression of Oak Harbor at the trailer park- visitors drive another half mile into town and look over to the left again. The corner lot has turned into a storage site for a number of 55 gallon drums. (photo at top of page)

Maybe lose the drums or build a fenced enclosure to conceal them.

I have spent time walking in historic downtown Oak Harbor and will do so again. Several businesses I’ve been very happy with: Skagit Cycle Center-Oak Harbor shop, Riverside Cafe & Lounge Oak Harbor, Dr. Dawn, Pony Mailing & Business Center, & Gene’s Art & Frame.

The Oak Harbor area is surrounded by pretty scenery- maybe just kick it up a notch.
