Archives for category: Limited Beer Selection

John Wayne generation not heading out to grab beer for the big weekend. Also not over at the new car dealership picking out one of the attractive cars or simple pickup trucks of the 1960s and 70s.

My favorite beer styles are NW or West Coast IPA, German Pilsner and Mexican beer. Here, in the Grays Harbor area, German beer appears to be unavailable. That adds a certain mystique.

I live in an area where beer selection is limited:

Beer Availability Report – Washington Coast

The shelf space available is occupied with what is new and most popular. Fizzy, Kool-Aid colored hard seltzers, lite beers, super, extra light low calorie/low carb beers, etc.

I truly believe:

The best beers are the ones you enjoy most

No problem with any of what is available, but the traditional stuff/less popular labels get edged out.

The two beers at the top of the page were recently purchased in Kitsap County.

Went out this afternoon and was looking for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Went to two locations. One had an old date-looks like they no longer stock it. The other location had a not so new date.

No problem with any of what is available, but the items that don’t sell as fast get edged out.

Grew up in the Cold War era and American beers were pretty uninteresting.

At about :30 below, Darwin describes the golden/tasteless lager brewed by big American beer companies during the past century.

Miller, Bud, Schlitz, etc. were popular when I was in high school. I call these Bowling Alley Beers- thinking of a typical Cold War era bowling alley.

Blogged about it here: Beer

Purchased the Mirror Pond shown above. It is a decent brew.

Looked on the web to see if I could find any reviews on YouTube. No luck. This is the second time this month that I have been unable to find any reviews on YouTube for beers that are well known and have been around for a while.

Here is one I have enjoyed for years now. Found it at Aberdeen Safeway on Jan 1st. To me, this one has a nice Euro-pilsner flavor. I like it, and have not seen it in the Grays Harbor area before.

As we have shared in the past:

Of the 4 Washington State counties I have lived in over the past 20 years, the Grays Harbor area has the most limited selection of beers.

My favorite beer styles are NW or West Coast IPA, German Pilsner and Mexican beer. Here, in the Grays Harbor area, German beer appears to be unavailable. That adds a certain mystique.

Blogged about it here:

And here:

Road Trip & Beer Availability Report

Last week, we took a trip up to the Olympia, WA Haggen store. This store has a huge beer selection.

Both of the German beers in the photos above were available at Haggen. Love it.

We can report that Radeberger beer (1872) now has label markings indicating that it is vegan:

I do not shop for beer because of this category, but always good with people who take joy in it. Wonder if beer always is/was vegan. How about gin, tequila, etc. All good with me.

Let’s go with a review:

Time for some fun:

In the rich world of fantasy where I live, I would be hanging with the five individuals who produced the reviews above.

Happy Holidays!

My favorite Mexican beer seems to be hard to find anywhere I shop over the past 10 years or so.

Another one I like is also hard to find:

A good selection of German beers are available at the Silverdale, WA BevMo! store.

Happy hunting.

In a recent blog, we shared about German beers being hard to find in Grays Harbor County.

Just back now from a road trip to Kitsap County. Happy to report that a good selection of German beers are available at the Silverdale, WA BevMo! store. Friendly staff too!

Dining out report:

We enjoyed dining out before COVID and have had mixed experiences since restrictions were lifted.

Happy to report that we found a nice Thai restaurant on our trip.

Quiet, uncrowded, nice atmosphere, attentive/good service and really enjoyed the food. We would try to dine out more if this was the sort of experience we could expect.

Back home.

I have lived in 4 Washington State counties over the past 20 years: Kitsap, Jefferson, Island, and Grays Harbor.

Grays Harbor has the most limited selection of beers. German beers are always the most difficult to find, but I have not seen them at all in Grays Harbor County. Ditto for Tsingtao beer. All of the above were purchased in Kitsap County this week. Recently, I have not been able to find Heineken in Grays Harbor County.

This update provided as a public service from Oak Bay Starfish.

The best beer is the one you enjoy the most.
