A 28- year-old Kent male was arrested as well as his brother, a 30-year-old Mill Creek resident. Thirty-two pounds of fentanyl, 2.5 pounds of heroin, over $32,000 in cash and three vehicles were seized.”

Mixed Messages

Mixed messages from various levels of government Re: cartel product inside the US.

If you are on the Kristi Noem team, you are out kicking ass.

If you are part of a local drug task force, or narcotics enforcement team, you are advertising the latest big drug bust after cartel product is able to move past the jurisdiction of federal agents at borders, border crossings and ports of entry and a barrier of DOD ground units, US Navy and US Coast Guard vessels prior to arriving in Hometown, USA.

If you are part of a local health dept. you are handing out Naloxone as always, to deal with the stuff that doesn’t get reported in the big local drug bust.

If you did time in uniform while risking your ass in Iraq or Afghanistan/working to keep a post 911 USA safe & secure, you see that cartels move product into all 50 states.

Rash of memorial plaque thefts, vandalism plague Westport

“14 plaques have been pried off raising ire of families, residents”

By Jerry Knaak The Daily World • May 17, 2025

Westport Mayor Ed Welter:

“You’ll end up with these transient camps. It happens every year. The fact that we’re having vandalism on the trail is indicative of a group of people that will do those kinds of things.”

“The ones we’re talking about are on that beach trail that goes from Ocean Avenue to the lighthouse and that is all State Parks property. It looks like they’ve been getting pried off. I don’t know what State Parks has been doing about it. State Parks has their own law enforcement capabilities, they have rangers assigned to these areas,” Welter said. ”If I had to guess, I would say that they’re probably getting scrapped, so there is some hope that we’ll be able to identify who’s doing this. If the officers can go to the scrap yards and identify a piece that is identifiable from one of the memorials then they can trace it back through the payment receipts or surveillance footage from the scrap yard. There’s some hope there.”

“According to Welter, the terrain in the area and the lack of proper staffing make it difficult to spot ne’er-do-wells.”

“Washington State Parks issued the following statement: “We are aware of these thefts, and our ranger has completed incident reports. Vandalism and property damage are an unfortunate part of managing public property. There are no formal next steps.”

Elimination Of Local News Reader Comments

Elimination of reader comments works against the idea of paying for an online subscription.

Years ago, I lived in several different small town areas. Places like Kingston, Port Hadlock and north of Penn Cove.

These areas had small, local newspapers and those papers featured active, online comment sections. Paying for a newspaper subscription was OK with me. There were basic rules for commenting, but it did not seem to matter what name people went by. I never cared.

I used to love the comment sections.

Local papers have stripped away all comments from past articles, and removed the opportunity to post comments to new articles.

Various newspapers in the Puget Sound area have gone with this trend.

Suppressing comments, getting away from asking questions related to public policy and telling us they need more support in the form of grant money, subscription and advertising sales, etc.

Got it.

Love to see newspeople out asking questions.

What we get now is sort of a press release style of news reporting where a statement is prepared by whatever agency was involved in the latest policy update, drug bust/federal grant money award, etc.

Newspeople post this statement as is. A 5th grade book report would require more in the way of asking questions.

Pentagon Diverts $1 Billion from Army Barracks to Fund Border Mission

Military.com | By Steve Beynon
May 28, 2025

“The Pentagon is shifting $1 billion meant for maintaining and renovating Army barracks to instead fund its surge of troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, a move that coincides with the service’s gradual deprioritization of quality-of-life initiatives for soldiers.”

“Many buildings that house junior enlisted troops are decades old, with persistent issues ranging from mold and pests to failing plumbing and broken HVAC systems.”

“In some cases, those issues have led to soldiers getting sick from constant exposure to mold and other unsanitary conditions. According to an estimate from the Congressional Budget Office, the Army has a backlog of $20 billion worth of repairs and renovations to its facilities, a figure that continues to climb, worsened by inflation, with the average building being 47 years old.”

Old Drug War – Cartels Respond & Move More Product Into The US

Has General Milley’s Operation Macho Swagger reduced access to cartel product anywhere in the US?

Cartels Respond To DHS Public Affairs Events

DTO believed to be related to the Sinaloa Cartel is able to move product past the jurisdiction of federal agents checking REAL ID (since 2009) at borders, border crossings and ports of entry before product arrives in Colorado.

DOD ground units, US Navy and US Coast Guard vessels sent towards the US/Mexico border fail to keep 41 pounds of fentanyl pills and other narcotics from arriving in the Denver area.

In the news:

Four suspects arrested in connection to Colorado fentanyl distribution network, Sinaloa Cartel investigation

“Authorities said 41 pounds of fentanyl pills and other narcotics were discovered when they executed search warrants on two homes in the Denver metro area on April 28.”

Cartels Respond Again

Real newspeople may ask:

“The USDOJ announced on May 6 that the DEA had arrested 16 individuals and seized huge quantities of fentanyl and other drugs in a multi-state operation.”

Human Smuggling Attempt

US Navy/US Coast Guard vessels sent towards the US/Mexico border and CBP Air and Marine fail to keep human smuggling attempt from penetrating 35 miles north of the international border.

In the news:

Three dead, seven missing after boat capsizes near San Diego

May 5, 2025 Ana Faguy BBC News.

“Three people are dead and at least seven more are missing after a small boat overturned off the coast near San Diego, California, officials said.”

“An official told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that the incident was being treated as a suspected case of human smuggling. A number of Indian passports were found near where the boat washed up on a beach, news agency Reuters reported.”

“It was unclear where the boat was coming from before it flipped about 35 miles (56km) north of the Mexico border, Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Sappey told the Associated Press news agency.”

Another article says “At around 6:30 a.m., a boat overturned off Del Mar just north of Torrey Pines State Beach…” This location is less than 35 miles north of the border.

Various sources indicate 35 miles north of the Mexico border.

Newspeople Avoid Questions Again

In recent years, the press tends to support government agencies, departments and policies rather than question them.

Out At The Airport, Real Newspeople May Ask:

If REAL ID is critical to the safety of America, have travelers out at the airport been less safe since 911?

Standard driver’s licenses have not been accepted at border crossings and ports of entry since 2009.

Love to see newspeople schedule an interview with the US Dept. of Homeland Security & ask:

Are passports/enhanced/Real IDs effective in keeping cartel-sourced drugs out of the US?

If special ID works to keep bad guys out- how are cartels moving product into US communities in 2025?

A real War On Terror would prompt newspeople to ask:

What keeps the terrorists of the GWOT from creating a disruption at the back end of the airport screening line?

Guaranteed: No TV newsperson anywhere will ever ask this question. Americans do not live in a free and honest society.

Imagine the TV newsperson, on camera, escorting the TSA official all the way to the back of the “be sure to arrive early line” and asking what keeps the bad guys from creating a disruption at that point.

If You See Something, Say Something®” – Just a slogan?

Americans were told that they faced a life and death situation after 911. If certain actions were not taken, terrorists could come to America to disrupt our way of life and attempt another 911.

If all this was a life and death situation that required sending the troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, wouldn’t it be important to ask a few public policy questions about what was going on?

“…the intelligence agencies have proved useless. NSA did not prevent the first attack on the Twin Towers in 1993, nor the successful one.”

“What goes on at airports is not security. It is Security Theater. When the government’s own agents try to smuggle “weapons” aboard airliners to test the system, they succeed ninety-five percent of the time.”

“Further, a terrorist doesn’t need to get aboard an airliner to blow up spectacularly. At many airports, hundreds of people line up at ticket counters during peak hours. A carry-on bag of explosive would easily create enough slaughter to shut down air travel and to make international headlines for weeks.”

Warnings at airports that unattended vehicles will be ticketed, towed, and perhaps destroyed are also Security Theater. By the time the vehicle was noticed, and somebody sent to check it out, an easy five minutes would have passed and the driver would be somewhere else. Boom.”

Border crossings and ports of entry

The Associated Press Feb 3, 2025

Tariff threats take aim at fentanyl trafficking. Here’s how the drug reaches the US

“Cartels make the synthetic opioid in labs and then smuggle it into the U.S., largely at official land crossings in California and Arizona.”

Standard driver’s licenses have not been accepted at border crossings and ports of entry since 2009. What got better?

“…combating the fentanyl trade will likely require more than just collaboration between the U.S. and its neighbors.”

$51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security Vote of Confidence:

“Even if Mexico, Canada and these other countries snap their fingers and did away with the drug trade, as long as we have that demand, there will be another country that will satisfy that demand.”

70,000 overdose deaths annually

“President Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China is partly aimed at combating the illicit flow of fentanyl into the U.S., where the opioid is blamed for some 70,000 overdose deaths annually.”

Zero Questions From Newspeople

Were US drug overdose death numbers higher before the US Dept. of Homeland Security was established (2002) or are the numbers higher with a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security in place?

Were US drug overdose death numbers higher before passports/enhanced/Real IDs were required at border crossings and ports of entry, beginning in 2009, or are they higher now?

The U.S. Military Is a Global Strike Force

Our take: The US should maintain strong and ready military forces.

Decades after the lessons of Vietnam, the Pentagon seems to specialize in undeclared/unwon wars. Understandable why young people & their parents & grandparents would take a dim view on all this. Continuing on this path will wear down the energy American families once had for encouraging young people to enlist.

Some will say obese teens and young adults are to blame for the big recruiting crisis. Thousands of young, intelligent and athletic Americans participate in college athletics each year. Certainly, they would qualify to enlist- no rehab/prep program required.

Why are these people not showing up at the recruiting office?

DOD sending another guided-missile destroyer to US-Mexico border

Story by Zach LaChance, Washington Examiner

Mar 22, 2025

“The release added that the vessel will be accompanied by a law enforcement team from the U.S. Coast Guard, which leads the government’s efforts to defend and control the maritime environment off the U.S. coasts and has tripled its forces operating on the southern border since the start of the second Trump administration.”

“This is the second guided missile destroyer deployed to the waters near the U.S.-Mexico border after the U.S. military sent the USS Gravely to the Gulf of America last weekend to crack down on illegal drug smuggling and immigration.”

“That deployment has already proved successful after the U.S. Coast Guard announced this week that it has interdicted over 80,000 pounds of illegal drugs since President Donald Trump entered office.”

“The Coast Guard recently announced the interdiction of approximately $141 million in illicit drugs being smuggled by sea and the arrest of 17 suspected traffickers, suggesting these enhanced maritime operations are already yielding results.”

New Drug War

Will the new drug war bring success? Here at Oak Bay Starfish, we are looking for any shortage of cartel product to develop in the Puget Sound area.

We are looking to see if there becomes less need for Narcan, buprenorphine, Naloxone, fentanyl test strips, or any similar product used in overdose response situations.

Will crimes like catalytic converter theft and copper theft become a thing of the past?

Fentanyl found in Snohomish County Jail during K9 search

KOMO News Feb 22, 2025

“A routine search by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at the county jail led to the discovery of fentanyl in the medical housing unit on Tuesday, the agency said.”

Routine search discovers fentanyl that maybe should have been kept out of the US by a $51.6 billion (every 12 months) US Dept. of Homeland Security.

Routine search discovers fentanyl that was able to move past jail security screening protocols and procedures prior to becoming the subject of a Sheriff’s Office commendation of the efforts of the corrections staff at the facility.

Bremerton boat builder faces financial strain amid federal funding halt

by Karina Vargas, KOMO News Mar 5, 2025

“The Bremerton-based boat builder, which primarily serves government clients, has been forced to halt work on several projects, including the ‘Mark VI’ patrol boats intended for Ukraine, due to an executive order by President Trump pausing foreign-assistance programs.”

“Schwarz noted that the halted contract was through the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement.”

“SAFE Boats International is known for providing vessels for search and rescue operations, as well as efforts to counteract drug smuggling and human trafficking.”

Lakewood drug kingpin sentenced to 10 years for helming multi-state drug trafficking ring

“The Drug Enforcement Administration, alongside neighboring partner law enforcement agencies, launched a lengthy investigation that uncovered the drug trafficking group, led by Joel Adrian Valencia Rosas, 28, was distributing cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana out of state, including places as far as Georgia and Ohio.”

“During the DEA investigation into the local ring, law enforcement officers seized approximately 52 kilos of cocaine, 23 kilos of fentanyl pills and 131 kilos of marijuana. The investigation also recovered a drug shipment that contained 37 kilos of cocaine and more than a kilo of fentanyl pills. In June 2023, a traffic stop on Interstate 5 (I-5) led to the seizure of 200,000 fentanyl pills hidden within the vehicle.”

Wonder what was happening at border crossing/port of entry inspections during the lengthy investigation described above. Do the good guys who made the local bust notify the good guys at the border about the weak links in their process?

Were federal authorities at the border notified of this ongoing investigation?

Did the drug traffickers get fast track screening at the border so as not to disrupt the ongoing investigation?

If the drug traffickers were given a pass at the border- would that have tipped them off as to the investigation- or would that have been seen as standard protocol?

Imagine LE authorities observe a shoplifter or bank robber in action. Instead of going in to make an arrest they back off and conduct a lengthy investigation. What if they applied the same tactic Re: crimes involving arson, terrorism, child abuse, DUI, etc.

Uncle Sam sent The Troops to Iraq and Afghanistan to keep a post 911 USA safe & secure and this is what you get back home?

Skagit County officials worry ‘killer’ batches of fentanyl are causing spike in overdose deaths

“The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn the public about an alarming number of fentanyl-related overdoses.”

“They say there have been 20 calls since the start of 2025, including nine deaths—five of which happened in the past week.”

“The Skagit County Interlocal Drug Enforcement Unit (SCIDEU) says it is concerned that ‘killer’ batches of fentanyl are to blame.”

“They also believe that many common street drugs such as meth and cocaine are being laced with fentanyl.”

“The drug cartels have started supplying increasingly powdered fentanyl directly into our communities,” Meyer continued.”

Giant US Dept. of Homeland Security Vote of Confidence:

“Fentanyl is dominating the drug market in Skagit County, the state, and the nation and everyone has been impacted by this. This is not going to end anytime soon and we must continue good work as a community to raise awareness, educate our kids, and work with the most vulnerable members of our community to provide services to help mitigate the impacts this is having.”

Throwback Thursday – Port Angeles Drug War

Voting is highly emphasized in American culture. Asking questions related to public policy takes a lower priority.

Are newspeople forbidden to ask questions related to Homeland Security funding and performance?

Love to see more in the way of newspeople out asking questions. Get away from posting the press release handed down from whatever agency was involved in the latest bust.

Zero questions from newspeople:

Plenty of questions here:

Port Angeles – Post 911 CBP Spending Spree

The press release style of news reporting avoids asking questions. Our questions appear in bold type.

June 2, 2010 Peninsula Daily News

What happens next to alleged Canadian smugglers of a quarter-ton of pot?

“Customs and Border Protection agents on marine patrol apprehended the Canadians unloading 547 pounds of “B.C. bud” marijuana off the Deep Creek area about halfway between Port Angeles and Neah Bay at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, authorities said.”

July 4, 2010 Peninsula Daily News

Details emerge in big ‘BC bud’ pot bust case

“Two Canadian nationals were caught unloading it from a boat near Clallam Bay at about 1:20 a.m. May 31, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent’s account of what occurred the night of the men’s capture following a 1.5-mile, high-speed boat chase.”

Why are Border Patrol arrest statistics secret at Port Angeles?

Port Angeles CBP arrest statistics are secret:

March 19, 2014 Sequim Gazette

Agent counters allegations of ‘boredom’

“In March, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Richard Sinks declined to release statistics on apprehensions or detainments made by the Port Angeles station.”

“Disclosure of the arrest statistics from the Port Angeles station would provide those interested in crossing our borders illegally with information that could aid their strategic targeting of potentially vulnerable areas along the border,” he said in an e-mail. “To maintain operational security these numbers will not be provided.”

Go and ask the FBI for Chicago bank robbery statistics. You’ll get the numbers. They won’t tell you that statistics/public records must be withheld because stats would assist bank robbers if they were shared with the public.

What other law enforcement agencies, anywhere in the US maintain secret arrest statistics?

Washington State Patrol shares DUI arrest statistics on social media here:

“Our #WSP District 8 troopers removed 1,429 impaired drivers from the roads in 2018.”

“Here is a breakdown of what it looks like in each of our 7 counties.”

Elsewhere, when CBP has something to brag about-the public is promptly notified:

Border Patrol Agent’s Public Safety Check Turns into Heroin Bust

If releasing info about arrests helps the bad guys, why was the public promptly notified of the May 31, 2010 arrests described at the top of this page?

Almost exactly 10 years later:

May 16, 2020 Bellingham Herald

Border agents seize nearly 500 pounds of marijuana on boat from Canada

“Several agencies partnered to intercept a drug shipment from Canada Monday, May 11, that contained nearly 500 pounds of marijuana, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

“Department of Homeland Security investigators, along with Bellingham Air and Marine Operations and Border Patrol agents, tracked the 23-foot Bayliner boat from Canadian waters to the John Wayne Marina in Sequim, according to a news release Friday, May 15. Agents then seized the boat and 497 pounds of marijuana.”

The most complete coverage on this incident seems to come from state-run media:

May 15, 2020 U.S. Customs and Border Protection

DHS partners coordinate to seize nearly 500 pounds of marijuana

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Port Angeles Station in coordination with Air and Marine Operations, Bellingham Air and Marine Branch, and Homeland Security Investigations interdicted a narcotics smuggling load on Monday, which had originated in Canada.”

May 12, 2020 US Border Patrol Acting Chief Patrol Agent Tony Holladay

Blaine Sector’s Port Angeles Station, CBP’s AMO and HSI seized 496 pounds of marijuana that was smuggled across the U.S./Canada maritime border yesterday morning. Always vigilant! #Teamwork #HonorFirst”

If releasing info about arrests will help the bad guys, why was the public promptly notified of the May 11, 2020 arrests described above?

Two incidents, almost exactly 10 years apart, both involving very similar quantities of marijuana.

Since Sept. 11th, 2001, are these the only two cross-border arrests made by the Port Angeles Border Patrol?

Are legal marijuana rules and restrictions in Washington State, so complicated that the black market continues to thrive?

Questions newspeople will not ask:

Are fraudulent overtime claims still the norm at Port Angeles?

Border Patrol whistleblower pays price for refusing overtime pay

Has Port Angeles CBP been able to intercept any inbound meth or heroin?

Even one time?

Is local CBP staffing and infrastructure at all relevant in keeping heroin and meth from entering Port Angeles, Clallam County, the Olympic Peninsula, or the Puget Sound area?

Newspeople,

Why did the Blaine Sector Weekly US Border Patrol blotter go extinct?

When local USBP staffing went from four to 42 agents, what increase in arrests and apprehensions was achieved?
