Was fan enthusiasm resting on some sort of patriotic house of cards?
There might be more respect for the We’re supporting veterans by standing for the National Anthem folks if they seemed to question decades of undeclared/unwon wars overseas. The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.
Maybe the best part of the games was the military and flag appreciation rituals, fighter jet flyovers promoting the urban legend that The Troops are defending American freedoms, surprise reunions for Troops returning from undeclared/unwon wars overseas, etc.

“I’m for free speech because that’s what our men and women of the united forces have fought for.”
Hey school teachers– where did this idea come from? Were US troops sent to Vietnam so that Americans could be free to send letters to the editor?
Is there any case in which the US Armed Forces have been sent to distant lands on a mission to protect freedom of speech?

DOD and NFL dive in to show support:
“It was a great honor and privilege for the Navy to be responsible for the 12th Man flag,” said Rear Admiral Gary Mayes, Commander, Navy Region Northwest, the Seahawks’ adopted military unit last season. “We did have the flag under the seas on submarines, we had it on aircraft carriers, so we’ve had it under the sea, on the sea, and also over the sea. Again, it was a great pleasure, and now we will turn it over to the 1st Special Forces Group — don’t screw it up.”
Don’t screw it up? Was there any 12th Man flags aboard the 2 Navy ships that crashed this summer- resulting in the loss of 17 lives?

Is this from the marketing, training, recruiting, or surplus fuel budget? I don’t believe it’s from Trump’s “military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory” budget, which he cited when denying transgender people the opportunity to serve, unless I’m missin’ somethin’ here.
William,
I think these militarized public appearances have been going on for a long time and are utilized to promote recruiting, which may be tricky in the post 911 era.
Comments frequently refer to “The Sound of Freedom.”
I got out of the Marines in ’99 with a solid attitude and a patriotic spirit.
Failed wars that never end and the ongoing glorification of military service have taken the shine off.

Enjoy a military flyover while clutching your clear plastic War on Terror-approved tote bag at the stadium-
“…the U.S. Air Force will be sending two aircraft from the Virginia National Guard’s 192nd Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base to fly over the stadium during the National Anthem.”
Q. Do the Hokies have a Clear Bag Policy at Lane Stadium?
Yes, the Hokies instituted a new clear bag policy prior to the 2016 season. The following are approved to be carried into Lane Stadium:
Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x12”
One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
Small clutch bag approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap and no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”

From a blog I did a while back-
A few months back there was a discussion about NAS Whidbey jets training over the Olympic Peninsula:
http://archive.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20151009/NEWS/310099978?fb_comment_id=fbc_1028779950500714_1028924293819613_1028924293819613#f9fcefb94
A question came up:
Why are NAS Whidbey jets not doing their training over a military reservation in Eastern WA, California, Nevada, etc. The federal government has set aside huge amounts of land for this purpose.
Answer:
It would take too much jet fuel to move aircraft back & forth over a long distance.
But wait:
Jet fuel available for round trip flight to Indianapolis to “wow race fans.”
