The big news is that Oprah may consider running for President.
Would she speak out against failed wars that never end?
She did an anti-war series in 2002, but some say that she is not anti-war.
To be fair to Oprah, there doesn’t seem to be much of an anti-war voice coming from anywhere in the US.
During the long presidential primary season of 2015 and 2016- shutting down failed wars that never end didn’t seem to be one of the big issues.
What do students at colleges and universities think of all this? Shutting down the draft was political genius. No more protests & more wars than ever.
As the decades of undeclared/unwon wars stack up (The Department of Defense track record goes back to 1949.) the greater the cultural urge to glorify people who do, or did time in uniform.
Some believe that The Troops are in distant lands defending American rights and freedoms. The recent attention to flag rituals at football games brings out comments along these lines.
How are we going to win failed wars that never end when high school cheerleaders won’t properly honor the flag at sporting events?
In some cases, the US Armed Forces provide for our physical security. That’s as good as it gets.
In terms of American rights and freedoms- The Dept. of Defense has no more say than the Dept. of Agriculture.
Are both of our major political parties OK with undeclared/unwon wars overseas?
In the weeks ahead- it will be time to celebrate Veterans Day.
Veterans Day was established in 1954 after Armistice Day was tossed out. How many US wars have been won since then?
