Copper Wire Theft – Press Release

Dec 19, 2024 – FOX 13 Seattle

WA fish ladder hit by copper thieves, disrupting ecosystem and economy

“A vital lifeline for local salmon and steelhead populations, the Granite Falls Fish Ladder is out of service following a series of copper wire thefts that began in early October 2024.”

Reaction Mode:

More than 8 weeks after the thefts began, part of the report seems to blame the criminals for not considering how much damage they were doing.

From video comments above:

“Did not worry about the bigger picture” and “didn’t realize the impact they would have on the state”. You people are talking about meth heads. Ascribing critical thinking skills to someone who’s made extremely bad choices in life. Sounds like officials coddling criminals which is why we’re here at this point.

Decades of Drug War experience:

“What is amazing is that authorities seem to think these tweakers might have considered the damage they were causing. Only thought is their next fix, and how to get it. Not much long term planning goes on in that world.”

“Pretty sure the state has some electricians on the payroll so labor shouldn’t be a big factor in that $250,000 repair cost and the news report said thieves stole “several hundred feet of copper wire” so where is the state buying copper wire that costs $250 K”

“It does not cost $250,000 to wire up a whole house! And that takes thousands of feet of copper wire”

“Maybe if crooks actually had to do time for their crimes, we’d have less crime. Where are all the cameras to see what’s going on. Stop paying those bringing it in, you know it’s illegally taken.”

The Oak Bay Starfish Take

A sensitive area previously hit with copper theft- what steps did WDFW take to prevent further damage?

Coordination with the local sheriff, impassable gates, razor wire fences, personnel assigned to stand watch, alarm systems, security cameras, key card access systems, etc.

Zero questions from newspeople.

Ongoing Puget Sound Area Gunfire

Would any newsperson ever ask:

Has any WA gun control measure or public policy effort of the past 20 years slowed down the gunfire between say, Everett and Tacoma?

What works? What fails?

Newspeople remain silent.

Everett updates here.

Seattle updates here.

Tacoma updates here.

Voting is highly emphasized in American culture. Newspeople asking questions related to public policy takes a lower priority.
